Navopatia Field Station Bird-A-Thon

The Navopatia Field Station is a 501c-3 non-profit organization incorporated in 2002. Our mission is Conservation, Education, and Research conducted largely from our Navopatia Field Station in Southern Sonora, Mexico. Through research and education we seek to promote understanding and conservation of the unique and beautiful landscapes of southern Sonora & the Sea of Cortez.

The annual Bird-A-Thon happens over two weeks: Feb 17th - Sunday Mar 4th. Teams will compete to see the most birds to raise funds over a 24 hour period. All funds raised provide the field station the opportunity to build upon its committment to education, conservation, & research.

Family and friends of the Navopatia Field Station-

We hope this finds you well. The weather has been pleasant and warm on the Pitaya Coast of Sonora. We write to let you know about some recent developments, projects, and successes, and to ask your support as we renew and reinvigorate the Navopatia Field Station Bird-a-Thon.

Over the last few years we have made progress toward the establishment of protected areas, increased our ecological monitoring, trained and taught dozens of students and biologists, and made new partnerships.  Those who have donated in the past have been part of our progress.  We are anxious to welcome new contributors.

With our partners at Nature and Culture International we have intensified our efforts to protect parts of Agiabampo Bay and its mangroves. Through several local, federal, and state designations we hope to reclassify large areas of the bay and its surrounding landscape to protect it from future development. Researchers from a nearby university have begun studies on water quality, carbon sequestration and mangrove phenology. We are able to share our information from long-term datasets and our expertise in the natural history of the region to improve the overall understanding of these systems. This has also created opportunities for interchange among students from Mexico and the United States.

We have continued to run the only long-term bird monitoring project in the area. This season we received grants to mist-net, band, and survey birds in the mangroves near Navopatia, the goal being to develop a greater understanding of the way birds use the mangroves in the winter. Our other long-term monitoring programs have suggested declines in species and numbers of birds. These declines may be the result of the continuing drought, climate change, grazing, and increased clearing of the pitaya forest east of us. Since we run the only monitoring program in the region, we are not yet sure if these declines are region-wide. Our continuing efforts will help explain and put these declines into perspective.

We know that you receive many appeals for donations. Donating to the Navopatia Field Station is a way to be sure your conservation dollars are stretched as far as possible. Our research and monitoring programs, our well respected intern and education curriculum, and our outreach efforts all depend on many funding sources. Individual donations remain one of our most important sources of funding. Your donations directly help protect the Pitaya Coast and the kind of education that is in short supply in this day and age.  Natural history may be fading elsewhere, but it’s alive and well at Navopatia Field Station!

With this year’s Bird-A-Thon we encourage everyone to start a team or donate to one. Bird-a-thons operate like walk-a-thons: people donate a flat sum or donate per bird species seen rather than miles walked. Everyone at the field station and in Navopatia thank you for your support.
