Navigating Foreign Healthcare Sucks: A Fundraiser

Tax deductible
As many of you know, I started my PhD in Germany this October. While one expects a lot of new things when you move across the Atlantic, one thing that I didn't expect was to start having health problems. In the past few weeks, I have been to several doctors' offices and one hospital, faced various administrative hassles with presenting my insurance, and refused care twice (because meinem Deutsch ist schlecht). If it wasn't for some *seriously* awesome new friends to help translate for me and finding a fantastic bilingual doctor, I would be even more lost than I feel now, and much farther away from good health.

Essentially, navigating a foreign healthcare system when you aren't fluent in the country's main language sucks. Especially during a global pandemic.

That being said, my entire sob story underemphasizes three points: I have a job, health insurance, and people to support me.

Some immigrants and refugees don't have this same luxury. On top of struggling with the language barrier and/or personal trauma, they might not have insurance to cover pressing health problems. This leads to them being refused healthcare when they most desperately need it.

After experiencing the alienation of being refused medical care firsthand, I would like to pay tribute to uninsured or precariously insured immigrants and refugees seeking healthcare in Canada, the country that I love and miss very much.

I'm therefore raising money to benefit The Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care. Their mission is to provide humanitarian medical treatment and assistance to those new to Canada who find themselves medically uninsured and precariously insured. You can find out more information about them at their website: https://www.healthequity.ca/about-us/

I know that times are really tough right now, but if you can give anything at all, it would really impact newcomers to Canada and mean a lot to me. Thanks in advance for your contribution, and stay safe out there! <3

Lots of love, Victoria
