Yá’át’ééh (greetings in Navajo) I am creating the Navajo Nation Reservation Relief Project to help the families within our Navajo Reservation who do not have the food, water, and supplies they need to survive this pandemic, with our focus being on the families who have elders, children, and special needs individuals but nonetheless we want to help as many of our people as we can. Our Diné people have some of the highest cases of diabetes, asthma, and cancer in the U.S. this makes them an even higher risk of being infected by COVID-19 which could be fatal. The Navajo Nation has also been reporting more confirmed cases of COVID-19 per capita than almost every U.S. state, behind only two states which are New York and New Jersey. Almost half of our people on the Navajo Reservation are without running water and electricity. This makes it even more difficult to protect ourselves from the virus especially the high risk individuals such as our elders and immune deficient.
The Navajo Nation is larger than the state of west Virginia, making us the largest reservation in the United States yet there are only THIRTEEN grocery stores on our reservation. This is a huge problem because not only are supplies very limited but most of our families (including mine) have to drive hundreds of miles to do basic tasks such as grocery shopping. All donations will go toward the food, supplies, and essentials needed for the care packages that are created which will go directly to the elders and families who are in desperate need of resources that are currently unavailable to them. Updates will be posted once the supplies that have been pre-ordered are in and the care packages are situated.
