"Nature's Walk"-A modern Dance Film

Donation protected

In 2014 I directed a Summer Dance Festival in Homer, Alaska and invited guest choreographers from Homer, Anchorage and New York City to showcase their own work in the culmination show as well as dance in my twenty minute long work in four sections titled "Nature's Walk." In "Nature's Walk," I incorporated film footage of Alaska's wild natural beauty by projecting the images behind the dancers for the performance. The images motivated me to think about how film could be integrated with movement and the creative process. I am re-imagining "Nature's Walk" and melding it into a modern dance film. I am excited to move dance into the nature that inspires it. This new film will represent the seasons in four sections. I have already begun to film and edit the summer section. I have been exploring light, expansiveness, water (oceans,a waterfall, and a stream) and forests (trails, lookouts). The dancers frolicked in the water and wore red dresses to represent forest fires and contrast with the trees. I will use the changing leaves of fall to investigate color contrast and shape; in winter I will experiment with shadows moving over textured snow as the darkness descends; and in spring I will examine rebirth and growth. I propose to have a finished product by June 2018.  Another concept I am interested in is the  intentional manipulation of time through the editing and post-production processes. By exploring a new medium I will be able to map bodies in nature and explore movement of those bodies in relation to the camera. I have been fortunate to work with exceptional cinematographers and aquire a decent computer and editing software.
I hope to continue to utilize wonderful artistic collaborators in the dance and film world. The funds raised will allow me to have the resources to pay for highly skilled dancers, post production equipment and the music rights to some compositions I feel are vital to making this film exemplary. The reason I am asking for more funding is because I am at the point where I would like to add in some moving music composed by affecting composers, but in order to do that I have to come up with quite a bit more money for music rights. I have two very specific songs in mind; one by Michael Nyman and the other by Philip Glass that would be ideal for the summer and spring section. There are also some other interesting composers I would like to incorporate from Ratatat to Rachel Grimes. All of these selections would require a large sum of money to be legitimate as I hope to send my film out to dance and film festivals. I would also like to submit it to residencies and venues where I could advocate my choreography. I have confidence that I can make a dance film that will be good but I am asking your help to make this film exceptional. I believe that music plays a HUGE part when experiencing film AND dance.  I do believe all will benefit who see this film. The underlying message is to save our beautiful natural resources and mother earth.  I hope to inspire the next generations of dancers and filmmakers.  I hope to instill a sense of awareness to the general public so we all can have a better world to live in.
By achieving the funds necessary to complete this film it will set me on the path to continue to make great art and dance works.  I would greatly appreciate your pledge and for those who pledge $40 or more I am willing to send out a copy of the final product next summer. Thank you and any little bit helps.
