Tribal members from Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and Yakama Nation reached out to members of the Cherokee Nation at about the same time, asking for food and water. One request was to a total stranger.
What happened to put our sisters and brothers in a position to risk asking a stranger for fresh water to drink?
There is an extended family group of Yakama men and women living on Lyle Point, Washington, a culturally significant and sacred peninsula at the mouth of the Klickitat River. They must stay in their camps on the banks of the Columbia river because they make their living fishing and selling salmon but in 2020 the lack of travel and tourism has reduced their income. The Yakama Nation administrative offices that could provide assistance are 1 1/2 hours drive away, and transportation is a challenge. These families form a remote satellite group with a great need, who are cut off from the rest of the tribe because of their livelihood.
South of Mt. Hood and north of Bend, Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs are in an increasingly dire situation with rising COVID cases and a Boil Water Notice in effect for more than 3 months so far in 2020 after a break in the water line that serves them. The 40-year-old plumbing infrastructure is failing and the water pressure is so low that the water is no longer safe to drink and leaders worry what would happen if firefighters needed to save a home. Over 4000 people are registered with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
Please consider donating through the Mt. Hood Cherokees At Large Community to ensure that our local Native people get the help they need during this emergency. Our Warm Springs and Yakama brothers and sisters need water and food most of all, but also need gas to run generators, cleaning and hygiene products, and other items of daily life.
