National Blackman's Read Aloud Hour

am raising these funds to develop, implement, and maintain a National Read Aloud Hour Podcast. For the past 29 months, I have been doing read alouds on Facebook Live. The purpose of the social media program model is to illuminate and eliminate black male illiteracy in our communities. For far too long a significant number of our community's male residents are suffering from the inability to read and comprehend and engage in the printed text.  The illiteracy percentages of black males facing our communities is appalling.

So, I have decided to expand my program to a wider audience. It seems that I have obstacles presented using Facebook Live that limits my ability to provide a voice to this situation.  During "The Blackman's Read Aloud Hour", I have personally presented non-fiction black historical books read in one-hour chunks. During the 29 month period over 75 texts have been read aloud. The expansion to the podcast format will allow me to invite prominent authors of non-fiction text to be guest readers. In addition, I would like to engage the everyday black man to be guest readers as well.

It is my intention to contract a number of college students to assist me in developing read-aloud sessions as well. The funds raised will be used exclusively for the development and implementation of the program.  Our black males do not see many other black males reading and I would like to change that situation.  In addition to the inability to read many in our communities don't get a collective dose of the magnificent history of our ancestral past. The read-alouds focus on reading complete books telling the full story of known and unknown black historical figures will change that lack of knowledge.

Our new leaders must be great readers. However, we must uncover hidden leaders who are stifled due to an inability to read. Malcolm Little entered the penal system illiterate. He left that same penal system literate with an understanding of the power of words. Malcolm X changed the world once he moved his needle of word comprehension forward.  We can no longer afford to lose our generations of black males to the inability to read.  Do you have rights in this country if you cannot comprehend those rights?

So join me on my journey to erase black male illiteracy.  If you would like to read my thoughts. Please do not hesitate to visit my blog. www.joesmokethoughts.com
