Nathan Shirkman Recovery Fund

This is the Nathan Shirkman and Danelle (Sabblone) Shirkman Accident Assistance and Recovery Fund:

On December 31st 2017 Nathan Shirkman was involved in a vehicle accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike while traveling to visit friends. Nathan suffered severe head trauma and was in a coma for nine days. Nathan’s mother Danelle (Sabblone) Shirkman put her job as a flight attendant on hold and rushed to Pennsylvania to be by her son’s side. This GoFundMe campaign has been created by friends of Danelle to help offset the financial burdens related to ongoing care and medical costs that will be needed over an extended period for Nathan’s recovery.

The accident: The exact cause of Nathan’s accident is not known at this time, however drugs or alcohol were not a factor.  Nathan is an inexperienced driver who had only had his driver’s license for five months prior to the accident. Severe road conditions coupled with Nathan’s driving inexperience likely played a major role in the accident.

Nathan’s injuries: Nathan sustained severe head trauma in the rollover accident. Fortunately, Nathan was wearing his seatbelt which protected him from possible death. He was in a coma for nine days and in intensive care for thirteen days. On January 24th of 2018 Nathan was transferred to a traumatic brain injury rehabilitation facility where he underwent extensive treatment and rehabilitation for his brain injury.

Nathan is making progress with each passing day however he has a long road ahead. He will be transitioning home where he will need continued in-home and out-patient physical, occupational, and speech therapy to maximize his recovery. The doctors have stated that it may take up to two years before Nathan’s brain is healed. Because of the amount of care Nathan requires, it will be a long time before Danelle will be able to return to work full-time.

The need: Nathan’s mother Danelle, a single mother, is a proud and strong woman who finds it difficult to accept financial assistance. Her friends convinced her to let them create a GoFundMe account to offset her loss of income and to assist with Nathan’s ongoing medical expenses. We would love to exceed our financial goal of $50,000 for the Shirkmans as they will truly need every penny of it. Even if we fall short of our goal we hope to help the Shirkmans as much as we possibly can!

How you can help: Your heart felt donation would be gratefully appreciated. The purpose of this GoFundMe account is to use the power of social media and the generosity of friends, neighbors, coworkers, family and complete strangers to help Nathan and Danelle get through this very difficult and challenging time in their lives.

Because Danelle is an alumni of Camden High School in San Jose and works for American Airlines, we are reaching out to Camden High alumni and to employees of American and any other airlines to make donations and share this request with others. Help us go viral with this plea for assistance! Please contribute what you can and please share this GoFundMe campaign with everyone you can to help us reach or surpass our goal. The funds raised in this campaign will be deposited directly into an account managed by Nathan’s mother for their mutual benefit and support. Thank you and God bless you!
