Our great friend, Natalie Hennes, was recently diagnosed with stage 2 Oral Cancer. This type of cancer is evasive and life changing, not just through the surgery and treatment, but for life. Fortunately, Natalie's cancer was caught early. The result of the surgery, however, means Nat is going to have to learn to talk, swallow and eat again.
Natalie has a young family, Samantha (7), Maggie (4) and a somewhat loving husband Rob... Seriously Rob is awesome and very supportive and loving! Natalie has always been really healthy, having played DIV 1 College Soccer; coaching High School soccer at Franklin High, and furthering her career as a personal trainer. Not being a smoker or big drinker, there is no reason why this type of cancer should have impacted Natalie.
Fortunately, Natalie does have medical insurance, however insurance is not going to cover the everyday expenses, and she is clearly not able to work while recovering.
On Monday October 23rd, Natalie is undergoing extensive surgery to remove the cancer. This is going to result in Natalie having a feeding tube for two weeks and being on a liquid diet for several months. A meal train has been set up for the family through December, so Natalie and the family can focus on healing and normal family activities, while allowing Rob to continue to work and travel.
With that being said, there are a number of major expenses that will not be covered by insurance. These included dental implants and scar cream. In addition, Natalie really needs a Vitamix machine to help prepare her liquid meals for the foreseeable future. The doctors have also recommended that Natalie consume various protein shakes (we are not sure which brand at this time), which are really expensive. She will need about 6-8 of them per day.
I am setting up this GoFundMe page to help raise money to support the large expenses they are about to face. According to John Hopkins University, cancer is the most expensive disease to cure. Any support, no matter how much, will be hugely appreciated by the Hennes family.
