Natalie NICU Exp. - Kelly Crockett

When Kelly became pregnant, she was both excited and scared as she didn’t want to pass on any of her epilepsy and is more likely than someone who does not have it. Kelly started having more seizures and migraines all of the time. She went into the emergency room after suffering with a horrible migraine for three days to find out her blood pressure was 267/140… they admitted her immediately and found that she had HELP which is the worst possible form of preeclampsia. The hospital had to administer a C-Section at 24 weeks and were unsure if either mother or child would make it through the procedure. Natalie Rose was born against all odds weighing 485 grams (just over a pound). She has been on steroids, a double ventilator, triple antibiotics while suffering from necrotizing enterocolitis which is a very serious disease that occurs when the intestinal tissue becomes damage and begins to die. It has been a huge roller coaster and they are still taking it one day at a time, but she continues to fight every day. Kelly has been traveling from NH to Boston every day to see Natalie with hopes that she will get well enough to transfer to a premature infant ward in a hospital closer to home. The expenses are mounting due to many hospital bills and Kelly has not been able to return to work. The doctors state that babies that have contact with their parents every day, have higher survival rates. Natalie just turned 8 weeks old on July 25th and Kelly got to hold her for the first time last week. It is truly a miracle.
