Nasser's Birthday

Comme certains d'entre vous le savent déjà peut-être, je suis actuellement à Chypre pour participer à un programme intensif de danse contemporaine durant les trois prochaines semaines. En arrivant ici, je ne connaissais absolument personne et je suis arrivé à mon logement avec le strict minimum, croyant que la résidence inclurait papier hygiénique, serviettes de bain, draps, etc. Mais surprise surprise, ça n'était pas le cas ...Heureusement un camarade de danse appelé Nasser est venu me dépanné. Il a offert de partager sa nourriture le premier jour de mon arrivée, puis m'a prêté une serviette, yay! Je vais donc bien me débrouiller pour trois semaines.
J'ai vite appris que Nasser venait d'Algérie. D'abord danseur dans les rues, j'ai découvert en consultant son Instagram qu'il a reçu le prix du président Street Award 2019 en Algérie pour la meilleure chorégraphie de danse contemporaine. J'ai aussi appris qu'il avait reçu une bourse d'études complète pour pouvoir fréquenter L'École des arts de la scène Pera à Chypre. De toute évidence, c'est un individu très talentueux.
Après le premier jour de l'atelier, je suis allée au supermarché sur le chemin de la résidence avec Nasser et d'autres danseurs pour chercher de la nourriture après une longue journée de danse. Nasser n'achetait rien ... Je me demandais pourquoi... Je lui ai demandé et il a répondu, un peu mal à l'aise, qu'il ne pouvait pas.
Plus tard, j'ai compris que la bourse qu'il a reçue ne comprend qu'une partie des frais d'hébergement. Donc, fondamentalement, il n'a toujours pas de couvertures, souvent pas d'eau chaude ni d'argent pour se nourrir même après trois mois d'études à L'École Pera. Malgré ça, il partage actuellement sa résidence avec des étudiants visiteurs et fait souvent la cuisine pour les habitants de sa résidence.
Après le troisième jour de formation, j'attendais le bus avec Nasser et d'autres danseurs. J'ai demandé comme ça par hasard quand était son anniversaire. Il a répondu le 3 décembre. Ma bouche est tombée. Nous avons tous les deux le même jour d'anniversaire! C'était une belle coïncidence.
Et puis ça m’a frappé: 1 dollar canadien = 4,35 lires turques (devise en Chypre du nord). Nos deux anniversaires sont le mardi 3 décembre prochain ... pourquoi ne pas utiliser cet événement inattendu pour amasser quelques dollars canadiens afin d'aider ce danseur talentueux dans son cheminement?
De plus en plus, au cours de mes voyages à travers le monde, même si j'ai de la misère parfois, je réalise à quel point j'ai de la chance d'être née au Canada et d'être entourée d'une famille et d'amis si merveilleux.
Cette petite collecte de fonds pourrait permettre à Nasser d’acheter du matériel ménager adéquat pour sa résidence, de la nourriture et de quoi dormir avec des couvertures pour l’hiver qui approche.
Puisque cela prend environ 10 jours pour recevoir les fonds du site Indiegogo, la collecte durera 6 jours et prendra fin le 3 Décembre. De cette manière, je pourrai retirer les fonds à Chypre dans la bonne devise et lui donner en main propre avant mon départ le 15 décembre.
Le jour de sa fête je vais filmer l'occasion où Nasser ouvrira une carte indiquant le montant qu'il a reçu de la levé de fond (évènement qu'il ne soupçonne aucunement) et l'enverrai à tous les donateurs :).
Vos contributions seront grandement appréciées et soutiendront simultanément les arts, hourra!

As some of you may know, I'm am currently in Cyprus training in a dance intensive program for the next three weeks. Arriving here, I knew absolutely no one and arrived at my accommodation with the bare minimum thinking it would include things such as toilet paper, towels, sheets etc. but surprise surprise, it didn't... The first person to help me out was a fellow dancer called Nasser. He offered to share his food upon the first day of my arrival, then lent me a towel, yay! So I'll manage just fine for three weeks.
I quickly learned Nasser was from Algeria. Starting as a Break dancer in the streets, I found out by looking through his Instagram that he received the President's Award Street prize 2019 in Algeria for the best choreography in contemporary dance. I also found out he received a full scholarship to attend Pera dance performing arts school in Cyprus. Obviously, he is a very talented individual.
After the first day of the workshop, I went to the supermarket on the way to the residence with Nasser and other dancers to get some food after a long day of dancing. Nasser wasn't getting anything... Wondering why, I asked him and he replied, a bit uneasy, he couldn't. So here's the thing, the scholarship he received only includes part of the accommodation expenses. So basically he still has no blankets, often no hot water or real money for food after three months of studying at Pera Performing Arts School. Despite that, he is currently sharing his residence with visiting dance students, and often does the cooking for the students in his residence.
After the third day of training, I was waiting for the bus with Nasser and other dancers. I randomly asked when his birthday was. He said on the 3rd of December. My mouth dropped. We both have the same birthday! I thought it was a pretty great coincidence.
And then it struck me, 1 Canadian dollar = 4.35 Turkish Lira (Currency in north Cyprus). Both our birthdays are next Tuesday, December 3rd... why not use this unexpected double birthday occurence to raise a couple Canadian dollars to help out this talented dancer on his journey.
More and more as I travel, even if I struggle sometimes, I realise how very lucky I am to be born in Canada and to be surrounded by such wonderful friends and family.
This little fundraiser may allow Nasser to buy some proper household equipment, food and sleep with blankets for the approaching winter.
Since it takes about 10 days to receive funds from the Indiegogo site, the campaign will last 6 days and will end on December 3rd. This way I will be able to withdraw the funds in Cyprus in the right currency and give it in person before my departure on December 15th.
On the day of our birthday, I will film the occasion where Nasser will open a card indicating the amount he has received from the fundraiser (the event which he does not suspect) and send it to all the donors :).
Your contributions will deeply be appreciated and will simultaneously be supporting the arts, hurray!
