For the family of Mario Diaz

We lost Dr. Mario Diaz Torres on Saturday August 31, 2024 in Mexico City where Mario an associate researcher at the prestigious Institute for Mathematical Applications to Systems Sciences (IIMAS), which is a part of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. He was a gifted mathematician and a deeply beloved father, son, husband, brother, and friend.

Mario was a passionate researcher who was able to cross disciplines and synthesizing ideas from statistics, information theory and mathematics to serve a common purpose. He was a rising star in Mexican academics, where he was looked to as a leader for subsequent decades.

In life, Mario bridged backgrounds, cultures, religions, and class and forged deep friendships with people across the globe. Independent of his success he greeted the world with humility and looked to see the best in all of us.

His sudden death is a major loss for the mathematics and statistics community across the world, but it is especially devastating for those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his mother, his sister, his wife Johanna, and his precocious young son, Mario Jr., who was being homeschooled by his parents (so as to learn mathematics in a principled and advanced manner).

The intention of this GoFundMe is to support Jhoana and Mario Jr. pay for the medical bills that arose from the fight to save Mario on August 31st and to help them rebuild their lives with the hope of nurturing a bright future for Mario Jr that honors his budding academic talent.
