Nancy Bailey, Mother of Samuel Flaugher

Friends,

As many of you have heard, my dear friend Nancy lost her 19 year-old son unexpectedly, last week.  On Monday April 15, 2019, Nancy received the call that no mother should ever have to receive.  After battling for his survival, Samuel Flaugher passed away on Thursday April 19, 2019. As you could imagine, she is completely devastated at this tremendous loss.  Samuel was her only child.

The death of a child is a unique tragedy of which no parent can ever adequately prepare for. She has requested one-month off from her work duties while she grieves the loss of her son. The days that lie ahead will be filled with mourning and reflection, a celebration of Samuel’s life, and learning how to cope with this immense tragedy.

Nancy wants everyone to know how much she truly appreciates the kind words, offers of support, prayers and condolences. They mean the world to her.

I am writing this because many have asked Nancy, “What can I do to help…flowers, food, cards?”.  In my own opinion, I feel that a monetary donation directly to Nancy would be the best contribution by those who would like to help. The time away from work coupled with medical expenses, funeral expenses and other monetary obligations, I really do feel that paying bills and other expenses relating to this tragedy should be the last thing this grieving mother should have to worry about. Her focus will be on her son and what comes next. You may also send cards and letters of encouragement and support to Nancy that she may read when she is ready and know that she is loved tremendously.

While we cannot even begin to fathom or comprehend any resemblance of meaning that comes from a life cut short, Samuel was an organ donor. After Samuel’s passing, the next steps were taken so that other’s waiting in the wings of hope for another chance at life were given one. These people on a waiting list received that call of hope and in doing so received that miracle they had been praying for. This speaks volumes to Samuel’s character, even in death, there he is helping others in need.

Samuel had been a resident of Chester, VA since the age of four and was a student at John Tyler Community College. He was a 2018 graduate of Thomas Dale High School and was a member of the Christian Life Church in here in Chester.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield, WV.  We are discussing plans to hold a local memorial service here in Chester for the family and friends who are not able to attend the service in Bluefield, WV.

You are welcomed to post your condolences and share your stories about Samuel, on his Facebook account or directly with Nancy.  Please check back regularly for updated information about the memorial service as it becomes available.
