Hi! My name is Charles Nana Kwarteng. I am 23 years old and graduated with top grades from St. Augustine’s College in 2013. I have always been interested in science especially physics and curious about how things worked, hence my passion to pursue an engineering degree.
Growing up as an orphan in foster care meant that I was constantly under the benevolence of mentors who believed and supported me through my primary and secondary education. I worked really hard not only to justify the confidence instilled in me by these benefactors but also to achieve my goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in engineering. After completion of my secondary education, I received a full scholarship to continue my education in Ukraine. My dreams were coming true.
My exhilaration was however short-lived. Due to the political disturbance in Ukraine, I lost my scholarship and had to return back to Ghana. I was distraught. However, I recognized this was just a set back and not necessarily the end of my dreams. Since returning to Ghana I have been working to both fend for myself and also save in anticipation of going back to school for the past 3 years. In order to ensure that other students in my situation got the same opportunities as I did, I have also been volunteering as the program administrator for the Africa Scholarship Program, a scholarship scheme set up to support students who can otherwise not afford a secondary school education.
I recently received a full tuition scholarship from the prestigious African Leadership University in Kigali to continue to pursue my dream. I cannot be more thrilled about this fantastic opportunity. The much-needed breakthrough to achieve my dream is finally here. But I can only fully realise this with your help.
The Ask: $4000 for year 1
The total budget for my 4-year degree is $32,500.
Thanks to ALU's generous full tuition scholarship and my savings over the years, I need about $16,500 over the next 4 years in order to be able to complete my studies. I am therefore humbly seeking $4000 to help cover my personal expenses including room and board, food, transportation, health insurance, books and flights for the first year.
My background motivates and reminds me of the fact that I have a responsibility to other young Ghanaians like me. If given the rare opportunity to earn my degree;
· I plan to return to Ghana to inspire other young people growing up in similar situations as myself.
· I hope to mentor them and through my career set up training centers that train engineers, empower and create jobs for them.
That's my way of giving back to my community!
Thank you very much for your support!
