Hello Friends,
My name is Nameera and I'm a trans woman of color in my junior year at Haverford College. I'm an English Literature major with minors in Creative Writing and Visual Studies and I'm also the first one of my siblings to attend college. I'm making this GoFundMe to help pay for my transition and survival expenses.
Over the last couple of years, I've been working 20 hours a week under two campus jobs while navigating a full Haverford course load, medically transitioning, as well as completing a research fellowship. I've been using my savings to pay for rent and I've also been sending money back home to help my siblings and my family with bills, especially because the pandemic has put a lot of financial pressure on my family. I also come from a low-income immigrant family and coming out would put me in a dangerous situation. This is why I've been living by myself and sustaining myself financially since moving to college. I now have nowhere enough funds to get the procedures I need to be comfortable in my own body as well as to mitigate the dysphoria I feel when I look into the mirror. Living with dysphoria has been overwhelming and has interfered with my ability to function as a person and a student. And unfortunately, my health insurance (like most health insurance coverage plans) do not cover the medically-necessary gender affirming procedures that I and many trans people need, so I have to pay out-of-pocket costs.
I'll be using these funds to cover gender affirming procedures, travel expenses incurred during procedures, legal expenses for legal name and sex change, rent, laser, as well as day-to-day living expenses.
With your support, I'll be able to feel more at home inside my own body. These procedures would not only vastly improve my quality of life but would also help to protect me from the disproportionate amount of violence trans women of color experience in this country.
Thank you for reading and for your solidarity.
