Nambot's house hurricane recovery

Hi, if you don't know us, we are Matt and Maggie Nambot. we have a 3 year old son and Maggie is expecting our second boy. We have been living in Wilmington, NC for three and a half year now and love it.

As the whole country knows, last week Hurricane Florence hit southeastern North Carolina, including our city of Wilmington. After a few days of wind and rain, we thought we would make it out unscathed. But on Saturday night, Hurricane Florence unleashed a flash flood on us just as we thought the worst of the storm had passed. In hours our street flooded completely and water rose 18” into our house. We became one of those news stories you see on tv: FEMA came in a boat up to our front door and pulled us, our 2 year old son, Matt’s parents, and our dog to safety. We are incredibly grateful for everyone who rescued us and has offered assistance to us in the past few days. Like most of our neighbors, we do not have flood insurance. Our neighborhood is not in a flood zone or a storm surge area, and it has never flooded like this, so we thought we were safe. Thankfully we were able to move most of our valuables up to higher ground before our house was flooded, but the damage to our floors, walls, appliances, and vehicles is extensive. We have been asked by friends all over the world about ways they can help us.

We could use immediate help to tear out our damaged flooring and drywall and sanitize our house so that mold and mildew do not spread. Since our insurance will not cover any of the damage sustained by flooding, and because both of us have missed work due to the widespread effects of Hurricane Florence, we are also in need of financial assistance. We have applied with FEMA and will also apply for loans to help with out of pocket costs. Because we have friends asking how they may help us, we have set up this go fund me page if anyone feels inclined to help us monetarily.

Now that we have power, we can assess the damage a little better. Some of our appliances have taken a hit, but our AC seems to be functioning as well as most of our kitchen appliances. Unfortunately, our washer and dryer did not survive and neither did our hot tub (some of our friends will be mourning that one as much as us). Both of our cars have been totaled and we are left with a couple thousand dollars to replace two cars. All of that plus the uncertain cost of replacing the lower walls and the floors leads us to set up the tentative need of $10,000 to cover these expenses.

Please know that we are already so overwhelmed by everyone’s prayers, kind words, and sacrificial actions to help us out in our time of need. Even though this has been a devastating experience for us, we are still so blessed by our family, friends, and Wilmington community.
