In May of 2005, our mother, Kahilinai was diagnosed with breast cancer. As single working mother at the time, with two daughters to put through school, this diagnosis seemed insurmountable. How am I going to pay for treatment while out of work? How am I going to afford school for my children, not to mention rent and living expenses?  Despite the fear and uncertainties, Mom’s faith enabled her to trust in the Lord and know that she would be taken care of. Never before has our family seen such an overwhelming outpour of love and support for our mother. Family and friends would bring over groceries and meals. People were always volunteering to drive her to and from treatment. Even her co-workers at Aloha Airlines donated over 13 months of personal vacation days to ensure a worry free recovery. Without a doubt she is loved.

After months of aggressive radiation treatment and chemotherapy, she was in remission.  Since then, we’ve enjoyed over 12 years of being cancer-free.

This past January, Mom started to feel an uncomfortable lump on the back of her head. After an MRI, doctors discovered the lump to be a cancerous tumor on her skull, as well as 9 lesions on her brain. Concerned about the possibility of the cancer having spread, the oncologist suggested a PET scan, which would uncover any other cancerous cells in her body. After receiving the results, she was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. The cancer had not only spread to her lungs, but also to her to lymph nodes, hip, and brain. Devastated yet not broken by the news, our family is determined yet again to beat this disease while bringing awareness and education to those who may be experiencing a similar situation.

Our goal with this campaign is to raise money for a woman who has done so much for her family, friends, and community. While we are always hopeful, the advanced stage of her cancer will need to be met with equally aggressive treatment. We are seeking a comprehensive approach to treatment, much of which is not covered by insurance. This fundraiser is the perfect opportunity for family and friends to once again show love and support for Naʼi.

It’s no secret that our Mother is the strongest woman that most people know. Despite the countless challenges and obstacles laid before her, she lives her life with so much love and joy in her heart, eager to share it with others. We are beyond grateful for everything and look forward to the many more years that we have with this amazing woman.

Mahalo for all your generosity, in all its forms.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
