Peace to my known + unknown family and friends!,

I am Nailah Ricco; a mother, Black Woman and invested independent scholar in the study of the Black diaspora, specifically as it relates to human rights issues and the journey for dignity, respect and autonomy for all communities of color.

Some of you reading this will know me to have done this work in New Orleans, LA. Others in my hometown of New York, NY. Others, will know me to exemplify this investment on a personal level - in my everyday life regardless of where I am geographically , spiritually or mentally (hehe). Some of you don't know me at all..yet. I truly appreciate your attention and hopefully support.

I have good news!: A body of research that I began in law school (and completed upon graduation, but is still ever growing) has been accepted for panet presentation, with question and answer, at the Race In The Americas International conference in London, November 22nd - 23rd 2014.

The conference will be held at The School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. I'm pretty excited. This school is one of the world's leading institutions for global studies as they relate to Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

I am scheduled to present on a panel entitled "Speaking to an experience before its time: socio-historical discussions of intersectionallity". I will be presenting my research on The Black Panthers, The Young Lordes and their "intersectionality" with the American "justice" system.

In particular, I will give strong emphasis on discussing the cyclical phenomena of the silencing of Black and Brown resistnce in the United States, via the legal system at a judicial level, through incarceration tactics and lastly, through interface with policing.

I grappled with accepting this invitation to go. I was initially intimidated by the notion that most of the other accepted presenters are professors at reputable Universities. I kept thinking to myself that as an independent scholar, sponsored by no formal university, it would be impossible to overcome  financial challenges barring me from contending in a space like the RITA conference overseas.

But I do know this - I am supported spiritually and emotionally by the very community of known and unknown individuals that created the spaces for me to make this body of work with confidence, experience and expertise.

Anything you can contribute would be helpful in securing travel and accomodations for the conference (passport fees included).

I plan on documenting this experience through a published article (did you guys see I had one published online earlier this summer??!! Yay!!) and with tons of photos in, in my typical choice of preffered archive (I love photos).

I love you all. (Yes, even the unknowns! <3 )

Thank you for loving me, supporting me and believing in me so strongly that it has birthed this dedication within me to communities all over the world,

Nailah
