<div>Alles staat stil, terwijl de tijd doortikt. En misschien het pijnlijkste van alles: ik voel me onzichtbaar en onbegrepen, omdat mijn ziektes van de buitenkant niet te zien zijn.

<div>Mijn naam is Fay, ik ben 26 jaar en ik zit gevangen in een lichaam dat niet meer meewerkt. Toen ik 18 jaar oud was kreeg ik mijn diagnoses, twee complexe, invaliderende aandoeningen die mijn dagelijks leven volledig hebben overgenomen. Ik heb het Posturaal Orthostatisch Tachycardie Syndroom (POTS) én de chronische ziekte ME/CVS.

<div>Dysautonomie is de overkoepelende term voor problemen met het autonome zenuwstelsel (AZS). Dit werkt als controlecentrum van de hersenen om de 'automatische' functies aan te sturen. Denk hierbij aan het reguleren van de bloeddruk, hartslag, ademhaling, spijsvertering, hormoonafscheiding, pupilreflex, temperatuurregeling en nog veel meer. Dit gaat bij mij dus allemaal mis.

<div>Wat voor anderen vanzelfsprekend is – opstaan, zitten, lopen, een gesprek voeren – leid bij mij tot o.a. hartkloppingen, zeer lage bloedruk, duizeligheid, koorts en extreme vermoeidheid. Elke dag voelt als een marathon, zelfs al blijf ik de hele dag in bed. Door de ME/CVS ervaar ik post-exertionele malaise (PEM) – een verergering van alle symptomen na minimale inspanning. Soms is zelfs een lichthuishoudelijke taak al genoeg om me dagenlang volledig uit te putten.

<div>Mijn wereld is steeds kleiner geworden. Ik zie mijn vrienden nauwelijks nog. Ik kijk vanaf de zijlijn toe hoe mijn leeftijdsgenoten diploma’s halen, werken en een gezin stichten. Ik kan mijn dromen niet najagen: al negen jaren probeer ik ook een diploma te halen. Elke keer mislukt dit omdat ik te ziek ben. De afgelopen jaren heb ik een BBL opleiding voor Gespecialiseerd Pedagogisch Medewerker geprobeerd te volgen. Ondanks dat ik zoveel plezier ervaar in mijn opleiding en stage houdt mijn lichaam me elke dag meer tegen en ben ik weer te ziek om naar werk te gaan.

<div>Momenteel ga ik hard achteruit. Ik slaap 18 uur per dag, heb veel pijn en moeite met alledaagse dingen zoals het huishouden, waar ik nu huishoudelijke hulp voor krijg. Maar ook bijvoorbeeld douchen, aankleden en eten maken voor mezelf is heel erg zwaar.

<div>Ik kom al jaren bij o.a. de huisarts, neuroloog, cardioloog, reumatoloog, internist, longarts, fysiotherapie, sportarts, ergotherapie, logopedie, diëtist, alternatieve artsen, MDL-specialisten. Ik onderga scans, onderzoeken en behandelingen. Ik slik al vanaf mijn 18 jaar zware bètablokkers om mijn hart enigszins onder controle te houden.

<div>Er zijn helaas in Europa geen effectieve behandeling voor mijn aandoeningen.

<div>Maar er is nu toch <strong>hoop!</strong> In Amerika zijn ze al veel verder met gespecialiseerde behandelingen met zeer goede resultaten. The Keiser Clinic is een kliniek die behandelingen biedt waardoor ik mijn leven weer terug kan krijgen. Zij combineren geavanceerde diagnostische technologieën met de nieuwste inzichten uit de klinische neurowetenschap. Dit doen ze om disbalans die de oorzaak zijn van hersenstoornissen te identificeren en te corrigeren en zo weer balans te brengen in het autonome zenuwstelsel.

<div>De behandeling duurt 4 weken en zal een intensief traject zijn. Hierna zal ik deze behandeling thuis nog een jaar voortzetten met online begeleiding vanuit de Keiser Clinic. POTS patiënten vanuit de hele wereld hebben al baat gehad bij een behandeling van de Keizer Clinic in Michigan.

<div>Deze kans betekent alles voor mij, maar de kosten zijn enorm: reis, verblijf, behandelingen, medicijnen... Ik kan het niet alleen. De kosten op een rijtje zijn:

<div>Daarom vraag ik jullie hulp. Niet omdat het makkelijk is om dat te doen, maar omdat ik wil blijven vechten voor een toekomst waarin ik mijn leven weer kan oppakken. Iets simpels kan doen met mijn familie. Mijn diploma halen en werken. Weer kan lachen zonder pijn. Mijn kinderwens vervullen En dit allemaal te kunnen zonder dat ik weken lang moet bijkomen.

<div>My name is Fay, I’m 26 years old, and I’m trapped in a body that no longer works with me. When I was 18, I was diagnosed with two complex and disabling conditions that have completely taken over my daily life: Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and the chronic illness ME/CFS.

<div>Dysautonomia is the umbrella term for disorders of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). This system acts as the brain’s control center for all ‘automatic’ bodily functions — regulating blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, digestion, hormone secretion, pupil reflexes, temperature control, and more. In my case, all of this is disrupted.

<div>What is second nature to others — standing up, sitting, walking, holding a conversation — causes heart palpitations, very low blood pressure, dizziness, fever, and extreme fatigue for me. Every day feels like a marathon, even if I stay in bed all day. Due to ME/CFS, I also experience post-exertional malaise (PEM) — a worsening of all symptoms after even the smallest effort. Sometimes, a light household task is enough to leave me completely exhausted for days.

<div>My world has grown smaller and smaller. I rarely see my friends anymore. I watch from the sidelines as my peers graduate, work, and start families. I cannot chase my dreams: for the past nine years, I’ve been trying to complete my education. Every time, I’ve had to stop because I was too sick. In recent years, I’ve been studying through a work-study program to become a Specialized Pedagogical Assistant. Even though I love the work and enjoy the training, my body is getting in the way more and more, and now I’m too ill to continue working again.

<div>Right now, my condition is deteriorating rapidly. I sleep 18 hours a day, suffer from constant pain, and struggle with daily activities like housework — for which I now receive assistance. Even things like showering, getting dressed, and cooking a meal for myself have become incredibly difficult.

<div>I’ve spent years visiting doctors and specialists — my GP, neurologist, cardiologist, rheumatologist, internist, pulmonologist, physical therapist, sports physician, occupational therapist, speech therapist, dietitian, alternative practitioners, and gastroenterologists. I’ve undergone countless scans, tests, and treatments. Since the age of 18, I’ve been taking heavy beta-blockers just to help regulate my heart.

<div>Sadly, there are no effective treatments available in Europe for my conditions.
</div>

<div>But now, there is<strong> hope</strong>. In the United States, they are much further ahead in developing specialized treatments with very promising results. The Keiser Clinic offers therapies that could help me reclaim my life. They combine advanced diagnostic technologies with the latest insights from clinical neuroscience to identify and correct the imbalances that cause brain dysfunction — helping restore balance to the autonomic nervous system.
