A Handcycle for Shane

Donation protected
From Shane's parents - Our Shane was in a rush to enter this world and surprised us by arriving 3 months early weighing in at just 2 lbs. 13oz.  Those weeks in the NICU were some of our scariest.  One month into our stay, some complications arose and as a result Shane has cerebral palsy.  We were quickly ushered into the world of early intervention.  We were visited weekly by a speech therapist, occupational therapist and a physical therapist.  They were an incredible support system for us in those early years.  Shane’s biggest challenge has always been his physical mobility.  He has been wearing AFOs (ankle foot orthotics) since he was a year old.  He used a walker in the beginning to aid with balance and has had botox injections/casting performed three times on his legs to increase range of motion.  As a 7 year old, Shane underwent major surgery on his hips, hamstrings and heel cords.  He was completely immobilized for three months.  His spirit and positive attitude during this ordeal was incredible to witness.  He had to start his recovery slowly by using a wheelchair for a few months and then his walker again.  As he continued to gain strength and mobility, he was able to walk again with just his AFOs within a year of this surgery.  Despite all the progress he has made over the last 9 years, riding a typical bike is not something he is able to do due to his CP.  Shane is one of the most active little boys you will ever meet.  He loves to be outside and has tried adaptive skiing and loves to swim!  Last summer, he used an adaptive bike for the first time.  He was in heaven!  The pride and joy on his face was something we had been waiting to see for so long.  The freedom and confidence that one gains from riding a bike would make such a difference in Shane’s life.  He could ride with the neighborhood kids and experience the independence he is craving.  He has been asking for a bike ever since last summer and turns 10 on March 2nd. We would love to make this typical part of childhood a dream come true for him.  In our family, we always say: “Don’t see a disability, see a POSSIBILITY!”  Thank you so much for your kindness and support!

All funds raised will be collected by ERA Key Charitable Trust.  ERA Key Charitable Trust will MATCH any donations that come in! If more than $3750 is raised (between funds raised here and matching funds), ERA will put the rest toward another handcycle for another child with CP. Help make this amazing difference happen in a young life with ERA Key!
