Hello! My name is Jim Bell, the Adapted Physical Education Specialist (APE) for the Sequoia Union High School District. Adapted Physical Education (APE) is the art and science of developing, implementing, and monitoring a carefully designed physical education instructional program for a learner with a disability, based on a comprehensive assessment, to give the learner the skills necessary for a lifetime of rich leisure, recreation, and sport experiences to enhance physical fitness and wellness.
My work for the Sequoia Union High School District has developed an array of programs and activities, including various sports and games, for students with developmental disabilities. I strive to help students who are unable to participate in the school district's general programs. I have been recognized for this work, both by the state and my district. I received the award for Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year for California in 2007 and Southwest District AAHPERD Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year award in 2009.
In June of 2014, I completed the Canine Angels Service Teams program receiving a facility dog to help with the service of students with special needs in our district. The Canine Angels Service Teams provides exceptional dogs for children with special needs, promoting the child's independence and providing a better quality of life. I hope to be funded to continue support for students with disabilities both in our district and at the Canine Angels Team training this summer.
