We have spent almost a year trying to get a proper diagnosis on our mom’s condition.  We have been told she suffers from a very rare brain disease, which has caused short and long-term memory loss, is affecting her eyesight, and her language and comprehension is also impaired.    Mom is only 52 and has spent her life as a devoted daughter, military wife and mother of 2 kids; my brother, Thomas and myself.  This past year has been a tiring year of misdiagnosis, 3 long term hospital stays through 4 different hospitals (she is still at the hospital now going on her 8th consecutive week on this visit alone) and although medical is mostly covered we have accumulated a lot of debt with hotel cost, gas, food, dog boarding and there will be the need for future care involving medical staff and assisted living.

In February 2016, it started with mom having a debilitating migraine, which turned into what looked like a diagnosis of stroke/bleeding brain that led to brain surgery in which they extracted 2 brain biopsies to try to get answers on why this was happening. After ruling out a sample of diseases such as mad cow disease, progressive Lyme disease, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), and many more, we are still left with no true diagnosis despite many neurologists, brain surgeons, neuropathologists consult. We were even invited to sit on a medical board with over 40 doctors in a room to diagnose her case in front of us at Vidant Health Medical Center. Even with the Doctors at Duke University, not a single doctor has seen brain scans like hers nor could provide any answers. Her brain is severely damaged and doctors are not sure how if possible to stop more damage .We have witnessed her in seizures, stroke-like states, and more recently a medical induced coma she had to undergo. She is unable to read, write, and walk on her own and is working with multiple therapists to include speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy at the hospital.

Between myself, brother, dad and my aunt, we have accumulated a lot of debt to ensure mom is well taken care of to the best of our abilities. We know with the past expenses what to expect for the present year so we are asking for your help and continued prayers if you are able to do so. The funds will help supplement future medical needs not covered by her insurance .Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Thank you and God bless.
