Jerry Zavala (23) was on his way to the market at the end of his block to get snacks for he and his brother's movie night on November 25 when four young men approached him and asked him for change. Jerry responded by pulling out his wallet, but rather than accept his generosity the young men shot Jerry in the back of the hip with a .45, took his money and left.
After a couple of surgeries, including one to remove the bullet, Jerry now has 6 months of recovery ahead of him: 6 - 8 weeks of physical therapy to learn how to walk again and another 4 months for his digestive system to repair.
Why do I care so much? Jerry is my coworker and my best friend aka brother from another mother. Prior to the incident he worked full time at Whole Foods to help support his family. Very few represnt a Whole Foods motto, "One store, one team," like Jerry. We miss him in the kitchen and need his energy, spirit and work ethics back on the floor. At the same time, we are so thankful for what really matters - Jerry's life.
During recovery he will not be able to work. Now more than ever, Jerry and his family need our support.
Our immediate goal is to cover the Zavala's hospital bills, but with a bit of luck we will raise enough for Jerry and his family to live comfortably these next 6 months without Jerry's income.
