Kyle Schreckenberg Rehabilitation

On Saturday, September 19, 2015, my 15-year old twin brothers, Chris, on left in photo, and Kyle, on right in photo, were out for a drive in a UTV when they lost control of the vehicle. It flipped on the driver's side where Kyle was sitting, and slid approximately 30 feet. Chris sustained minor injuries, but Kyle was not so lucky.
Kyle's left arm was crushed, and a large artery in that arm was severed. Chris, his older brother by just seven minutes, was a true hero that day. With his bare hands, Chris put pressure around the artery to prevent too much bleeding. Luckily before long, a car came and the driver called 911 and handed Chris a towel to wrap around Kyle’s arm. When paramedics arrived and approached Chris, he refused any sort of medical treatment, telling them “Don’t help me, help my brother.”
Kyle was air lifted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis. The attending doctor said Kyle had sustained the worst injuries from an ATV/UTV accident he had ever seen. In his left arm, along with the severed artery, Kyle had severely broken his humerus and elbow. On his right hand, he had broken his thumb and two fingers.
When Kyle went back for emergency surgery, they told us the heartbreaking news that they would have to amputate his right index and middle fingers. Initially, they thought they'd have to amputate his left arm but thanks to the skilled surgeons at Cardinal Glennon, they were able to save it by transferring an artery from his leg to allow bloodflow.
In the following two weeks, he had three more surgeries, resulting in two bars that hold his humerus together, 12 screws that hold his elbow together, and two pins in his right thumb. He came home October 3rd without the use of either of his hands.
My brother is still is in high spirits after everything he's been through. He's told everyone numerous times that he’s ready to get the healing process done because he is going to work out to prepare for his junior year of high school football. He is a very tough kid and shows no signs of quitting.
My family is extremely thankful that Kyle is still with us -- the EMTs on the scene that day were completely surprised to find out he survived. But in the months and years ahead, Kyle will most likely have more surgeries, and will need a lot of therapy to adjust to his new way of life.
Many have prayed for Kyle and the rest of my family, and the prayers have been helping tremendously. But now I have one more favor to ask. If anyone would be willing to donate to help my family pay for Kyle’s medical and upcoming therapy bills, I would be forever in your debt.
