Can you imagine living on less than a dollar a day? In Honduras, 63% of the population lives on less than a dollar a day, and children’s books cost $30 per piece. After hearing this, I knew that I wanted to do something, anything, to help. Everything in me screamed for action. Today, I am so overwhelmed with joy to be able to share my volunteer trip opportunity with you.
Unclean water kills 3.4 million people each year, 90% of which are children under 5. In the rural regions of Honduras, such as La Florida, nearly 63% of the population is considered extremely poor, living on less than a dollar a day. The majority of people in rural Honduras have no access to water systems and use contaminated water from nearby streams and rivers. They also live without a toilet. Tough to envision for most of us, I am sure.
This April, I have the opportunity to travel to Honduras for ten days with fellow members of my church to serve the community of La Florida in the region of Opatoro by building five "pilas" at local schools, which are multi-use fresh water stations for drinking and hand washing. We are also bringing with us Spanish language storybooks for children, which are quite affordable in the United States but as mentioned, cost $30.00 each in Honduras.
In order to participate in this trip, I have to raise $1,700 by Saturday, February 28, in order to provide for travel expenses, in-country costs, and materials for the projects described above. It would truly mean a lot to me if I could ask for your generous donation to supporting us make a difference. Would you please help?
