UWander Service Trip: Lawrence-DR

From April 18 to April 24,  I will be traveling to my native Dominican Republic with a team of other professionals to serve as volunteers at a local high school with the UWander Service Trip, a service trip organized by a fellow Lawrencian.  Uwander strives to expose community members and professionals to the idea of what it means to be a global citizen. As you might now,  I have developed my civic engagement identity in Lawrence, MA working within the Latino community around issues in education, labor, women’s rights, and social justice at a local level.  This trip is an opportunity for participants in this unique experience to connect the bridge between local and global social justice issues.

To prepare for this experience, our team is actively participating in group meetings to learn important background information related to the issues that we would be witnessing firsthand while we are on the trip. 

I am sharing this with you because this experience is very important to me. Part of our team’s collective responsibility is to include others in our experience, before and after the trip. I invite you to be a part of this journey with me. I am asking  for your financial assistance. Every participant going on this UWander trip is responsible for helping to defray the cost of our travel and to support the site we will be visiting. Any contribution that you are willing to make in support of my trip is greatly appreciated, and I hope you will agree that it will be money well spent.

Del 18 al 24 de abril estaré en República Dominicana junto a un equipo de profesionales de Lawrence y otras comunidades en la Escuela Guatemala en Santo Domingo sirviendo como voluntaria en una misión de servicio. Esta misión fue concebida y organizada por otra joven Dominicana, maestra en  la Lawrence High School. El propósito de esa misión es exponer a miembros de nuestra comunidad a la idea de ser ciudadanos del mundo. Como sabe, por más de 8 años me he dedicado a ser activista  dentro de la comunidad Latina de Lawrence en asuntos relacionados con la educación, derechos laborales, y otros asuntos de justicia social. Para los miembros de esta misión, esta es una oportunidad de conectar nuestros desafíos como comunidad dominicana en la diáspora con los de la isla.

Comparto esto con usted porque esta misión es importante para mí. Nuestro equipo trata de integrar a otros antes y después del viaje. La invito a formar parte de este viaje. Hoy le pido que se integre a través de un pequeño aporte. Cada participante en esta misión es responsable de ayudar a cubrir el costo del viaje y un aporte a la escuela.
