Alfred Main Street and Meals

Donation protected
Today, Friday, July 16th, we delivered 20 meals from The Rosebush (owner George Mickle) to the residents of the Maple Apartments in Alfred.  George prepared a chicken entree that smelled fantastic.  This is the last scheduled meal distribution for the Alfred Main Street and Meals project.  The account for this project still has about $30 left.  We are leaving the account open in case there is a need to start up this project again in the near future, but we certainly hope the worst of the pandemic is behind us.  Thank you to all of you who supported this project!

This Thursday, June 3, was our last big meal distribution. We gave out 101 meals from the Terra Cotta Coffee House. Families received sandwiches with chips and a cookie. Our volunteers from the previous distribution, Luanne Crosby, Kerry Kautzman and her daughter, Ellie, Nicole Munkwitz, and Otto Muller returned to help out one last time. There is some money left in the account for one more small meal distribution (for about twenty meals) for the residents of the Maple Apartments. We will be scheduling that soon.

Our community truly came together to make this project possible. You contributed to the fund. The restaurant owners and their staff prepared amazing meals. Volunteers helped prepare the lists of families receiving the meals and others helped distribute the meals. Our project is winding down as is (we hope) the pandemic, but, of course, the needs of this community will continue. As individuals we will continue to support some of the other more permanent support networks, like our local food banks, the Allegany-Cattaraugus-Chautauqua Fund for Women, and other volunteer organizations.

Special thanks go to: Michele Hluchy (for running this website), Melissa Jusianiec (for preparing the lists of families receiving the meals), Jane Cochran, Mary Gardner Ruch and Jonathan Hilsher (for giving us names of families for the lists), Pastor Roger Gardner from the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship in Alfred (for supporting this with so many volunteers to distribute meals), Juliana Gray and her honors students from Alfred University (for distributing meals), and the other volunteers who helped with this project, including Luanne Crosby, Kerry Kautzman and Ellie, Nicole Munkwitz and Leon, Otto Muller, and Becky and Craig Prophet.

Thank you again for your support of this project for the past five months!

Today, May 20, was the next to the last meal distribution for our project.  We delivered one hundred meals from The Rosebush (owner George Mickle).  George prepared Veal Parmigiana with Penne Pasta and Garlic Toast.  The food smelled so good, we were starving after delivering all of the meals.  This time we received help delivering the meals from members of the Alfred University community:  Luanne Crosby, Kerry Kautzman and her daughter Ellie, Nicole Munkwitz and her son Leon, and Otto Muller.

The last distribution of meals will be on Thursday, June 3rd.  We will be distributing meals from the Terra Cotta Coffeehouse.

Today, Thursday, May 6, was our seventh distribution of meals. Today’s meals for the community were from Uncle Alfred’s Sub Shop. Once again, Ellen Odell, the owner of Uncle Alfred’s, prepared 100 meals of subs, macaroni salad, chips, and homemade cookies. Today the dedicated volunteers from the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship helped with delivering the meals for the last time. Their generosity and kindness under the leadership of Pastor Roger Gardner played a key role in making this whole project possible. When we needed them most, they were there! Our next distribution of meals will be from The Rosebush (owner George Mickle) on Thursday, May 20. After that, we will be doing one last distribution of meals from the Terra Cotta Coffeehouse on Thursday, June 3.

Here are some photos from May 6:

A “thank you” to all of you who have been a part of this project from the residents of the Maple Apartments after receiving some luscious pasta meals and salads from Duke’s Main Street Pizza. What we are doing has really made a difference during this pandemic.

UPDATE: On this snowy day in April, we will be doing our sixth distribution of meals.  This time families had a choice of three different baked pasta options from Duke’s Main Street Pizza:  chicken parmesan, meatball or cheese, each with a side salad.  With the help of Jonathan Hilsher from Alfred State and Luanne Crosby from Alfred University we were able to include students from both campuses in this meal distribution.  Our drivers this time are community members Mary and Jim Gardner-Ruch, and Alfred University faculty members Luanne Crosby and Kerry Kautzman as well as Kerry's daughter Ellie.

Thank you again to all of our volunteers and to Cameron Duke, the owner of Duke’s Main Street Pizza, for being a part of this project.

UPDATE: Thursday, April 8 was our fifth distribution of meals, all made possible by your generous donations. The meals, Chicken Marsala with a side salad, were from The Rosebush. Many thanks to George Mickle (photo below), owner of The Rosebush, for being a part of this. Volunteers from the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship helped out again with distributing the meals. A very big thanks to all of you volunteers who have helped out these past four months and made this project possible. Thank you, Melissa Jusianiec, for the hours you’ve spent making up the lists of families that receive the meals.

UPDATE: We are so humbled and grateful for the outpouring of support for this project.  Our generous supporters have donated twice what we had originally set as our goal.  We will have two meal distributions in April, two in May and one in June.  We have enough pledged for those, so we are ceasing our fundraising as of now.  Thank you all so much for your generosity.

UPDATE: Our next two distribution of meals will be Thursday, April 8 and Thursday, April 22.  On the 8th, meals will be provided by The Rosebush, 11 N. Main St, Alfred, NY, owned by George Mickle. On April 22, Duke’s Main Street Pizza (owner Cameron Duke) at 38 N. Main St, Alfred, NY.

Our fourth distribution of meals took place on March 18.  Jill Grigg from Cambridge Catering prepared chicken soup, homemade bread and cookies. Just the right food for a rainy day.

Even the mayor of Alfred showed up to help out!

UPDATE: Our next distribution of meals will be this Thursday, March 18.  We will be delivering meals from Cambridge Catering (owner Jill Grigg).  Local Alfred Station and Almond residents along with Alfred University students from Juliana Gray’s Honors Seminar will be helping to deliver the meals.  Thank you again to everyone for your support of this project

UPDATE: Our third distribution of meals was another success. Noah Heyman and his team at the Old Mill Inn made 100 chicken dinners. Volunteers from the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship and AU students from Professor Juliana Gray’s Honors Seminar helped deliver the meals. We do our best to let families know about the meals ahead of time, but we aren’t perfect. Sometimes families aren’t there to receive the meals. When that happens, our drivers have been flexible and make sure the meals go to a different family that has appreciated the surprise.

UPDATE: Our second distribution of meals was also a great success!  Volunteers from the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship drove to deliver the meals from the Terra Cotta and they were accompanied by AU student volunteers from Juliana Gray's Honors Seminar!  A big thank you goes out to all of them and to the Terra Cotta!  Next meal distribution will be on Thursday March 4 and the meals will be from the Old Mill, 1 Depot St. in Alfred Station (owner Noah Heyman).

UPDATE: Our first distribution of meals was a great success!  The weather cooperated and the teams of volunteers were able to distribute all of the meals.   These volunteers are amazing indeed, because they are ready to do it again next month.  We also got feedback from those receiving the meals about how much they enjoyed all of the food from Uncle Alfred's Sub Shop.  Here's to Ellen Odell and all of her great work preparing 100 (well, actually 101)  subs, macaroni salad and cookies!

UPDATE:  we have raised more than our original goal of $4000 (thank you to donors for their amazing generosity!) and are increasing the goal so that we can provide even more meals!

During this pandemic, more local families are experiencing food insecurity and local businesses are seeing a drastic decrease in customers.  The purpose of this project is to provide meals to those in our local community who would benefit most and to support local businesses providing those meals.  Once a month from January - April, we will be delivering 100 dinners to local families.  Volunteers from the following local churches are helping us to identify families that would most benefit from these meals and helping to distribute the meals:  Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, St. Jude’s Chapel, and the Union University Church.
The first $1000 of this project was funded by an anonymous donation outside of GoFundMe.  This money is being used to support our first distribution of food.  The GoFundMe funds will be used for the remainder of the distributions  as shown below.

The first business participating was Uncle Alfred’s Sub Shop at 17 N. Main Street, Alfred, NY, and owned by Ellen Odell.  Our first distribution of meals will be taking place on Thursday, January 21, 2021.  (funded by anonymous donation).

Our second business is Terra Cotta Coffee House at 34 N. Main St. in Alfred, NY (Owner/Manager Rachael Gardner Nunez).  The food distribution for February will be on Thursday, Feb. 18th.

Our third business is the Old Mill Restaurant, 1 Depot St., Alfred Station, NY, owned by Noah Heyman.   Those meals will be delivered on March 4.

Our fourth business is Cambridge Catering, S. Main St., Alfred, NY, owned by Jill Grigg.  Meals will be delivered on March 18.

Our fifth business is The Rosebush, 11 N. Main St, Alfred, NY, owned by George Mickle.  Meals were delivered on April 8.

Our sixth business is Duke's Pizza (owner Cameron Duke) at 38 N. Main St, Alfred, NY.  Meals will be delivered on April 22.

Our seventh business is a repeat: Uncle Alfred’s Sub Shop
at 17 N. Main Street, Alfred, NY, and owned by Ellen Odell.  Those meals will be distributed on May 6.

Each business participating will receive $1000 for preparing and packaging 100 meals for distribution.  Your contribution will help make this support of local families and businesses possible.  If we exceed our fundraising goal, we will distribute meals more frequently than once a month and might extend the food distribution into May and June.  Thank you for whatever you can give to support these families and businesses.

Thank you for your amazing generosity!

Fundraising goal:  $5000 to provide one meal a month.  More money provides more meals!
