As the team recharged with chocolate after a particularly challenging meeting, the young and very soft-spoken Special Education teacher made a shockingly salty comment about the caramel left dangling from her school psychologist’s mouth.  I was that school psychologist, and as the stunned silence turned to gales of laughter, I instantly knew we were going to be friends.

Although our lives have evolved and changed over the twenty years since then, she has remained a true friend and confidant.  However, I’m only one of a large circle of friends, family, and colleagues who adore her.  She is a beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin, and aunt.  She is the devoted mother of three active school-aged daughters.   Roxy worked for a decade as a Special Education teacher at Mora Public Schools, working tirelessly to design instruction, teach, and otherwise improve the lives of students with Developmentally Cognitive Delays and Autism.  Now as an elementary classroom teacher, she not only continues to shape the lives of countless students, but has supported and assisted her colleagues through instructional coaching.  She provides coaching to students as well, including her girls' traveling volleyball team and the district’s junior high track team.  Roxy loves the outdoors, and in her “spare” time, enjoys running, skiing, kayaking, fishing, and hunting with family and friends.

In early March, while trying to locate the source of ongoing rib pain, Roxy discovered a small lump in her breast.  Within days, she was diagnosed with Infiltrating Ductile Carcinoma at the Piper Breast Center.  (That initial pain?  Fractured rib!)  She is scheduled for surgery on April 9th, followed by several weeks of radiation treatment.

When Roxy shared her breast cancer diagnosis, the immediate response was denial.  “No! That can’t possibly be right!”  Once the shock began to ebb, thoughts turned to “What can I do and how can I help?”   Considering all the lives she has touched and continues to impact, both personally and professionally, I imagined there are many others thinking the very same thing.

This is one way we can help.  Although Roxy has health insurance, her deductible is very high.   Even when met, we all recognize the financial strain that surgery and ongoing treatments will place on her.   If able, please consider helping Roxy and her family in their time of need.
