Myca's TuckerBlue Racing team

My grandson, Myca Garrett, got hooked on racing when he was still young enough for me to carry on my shoulders and we attended the free practice day for the first Indycar Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It didn't hurt that we practically bumped into Helio Castroneves as he was introducing his new car for that year, but Myca's interest in watching the driving surprised me.

By the second year he could identify the cars as well as I could, his new hero became the Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe (he liked his sense of humor). He began driving at various karting concessions around Indy as soon as he was tall enough, and he discovered that driving and racing is even more fun than watching it.

His early ability and interest in the engineering and science that goes into today's racing cars have motivated me to try buy a used kart chassis and LO206 engine to run at local tracks (we live close to two excellent ones). He will be attending the K-1 racing course in the spring and learning there.

But we're also building a racing team—a group of friends and family to participate and learn with us—because the team aspect is one of the most overlooked aspects of the sport. We've named our team TuckerBlue Racing, after our voracious Labrador Tucker and Blue, his coonhound sidekick. Myca's 11-year-old cousin has designed the logo, and his aunt, the team cellist, is writing the team theme song. We'll be posting the logo as soon as they arrive from Los Alamos, NM.

Of course, Myca and his friends are excited by this prospect and the chance to learn not just the driving, but the set-up and strategy involved in kart racing. And this site serves as both a fun way to help fund Myca's dream and a valuable lesson in one of the most important skills in racing today—gaining sponsors!

"Racing is a different way to be active than most people think," Myca told me when I mentioned I would be setting up this site. "And it's a different way to learn. But I like racing, most importantly, because it's fun. I want to race because I love to race!"
