Help Mya’s Heart

Mya came to B-Squad as a breeder release due a reported Grade 2 heart murmur. Mya is an 8 week old female toy Aussie that weighs in at a whopping 1.8lbs. Today we learned that her heart condition is more serious than we first anticipated. Upon examination it was determined that Mya has a Grade 6 on a six point scale heart murmur. She will need to see a cardiologist as soon as possible. Our veterinarian believes that Mya very likely has Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) PDA is the failure of a large blood vessel, the ductus arteriosus, to close just after birth. In the fetus, this vessel is normal and allows blood to bypass the lungs since the lungs are not used during development in the uterus. This vessel runs from the aorta to the pulmonary artery. At birth, the vessel should close within hours, directing blood to flow into the newly inflated lungs. Pets diagnosed with a PDA have a greater than 50% mortality rate by one year of age if left untreated. Most dogs and cats that undergo correction of their PDA have good to excellent long term prognosis, and most will lead a completely normal life after surgery. Mya’s Heart May not function correctly, but this girls love for life is hard to deny. In just two days in rescue since coming from an over 500+ breeding operation where she received no love or attention, Mya is not comfortable unless she’s snuggling with someone.
