Mya's Medical Expenses

This is my beautiful warrior niece, Mya. She's one of the bravest individuals I have ever met. It has been a couple weeks since Mya started feeling ill. A couple trips to Urgent Care and the ER were unproductive, and Mya wasn't improving. On the morning of December 26, her mom (my sister), Sara, took her to Urgent Care looking for answers yet again. This time, Urgent Care immediately sent her to the Emergency Room, and after a short time there, they were transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit. She has been in the Pediatric ICU since Monday.

Mya was diagnosed initially with pneumonia and an ear infection, and that diagnosis was quickly expanded to include RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and HUS (Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome). Fluid in her chest cavity required a chest tube, and bacteria in her blood is causing toxins to build up in her kidneys, which are only functioning at about 20-30%. She has since been intubated and has had a PICC line placed to make drawing labs and giving medications easier on her tiny body.

As of today, Sara has not left the hospital in 6 days. Both Sara and Randy (Mya's parents) have missed work all week, and will continue to stay by Mya's side while she is at the hospital. She is expected to be here for at least 2 more weeks. Her younger sister has been unable to visit at all, and remains with family.

If you are able to help, PLEASE do so. Both Sara and Randy are very involved parents, and work full-time jobs. Their vacation days have quickly been used up and medical costs are astronomical. No parent should ever have to choose between staying by their extremely ill child's side and paying bills.
