MY QUEER BLACK OWNED BRAND KAHUMBI NEEDS YOUR HELP

PT

Background:

O teu donativo vai ajudar a atingir o seguinte:

EN

For years I’ve been dreaming of starting my own business and provide for other queer POC artists and collaborators, but unable to afford that. Right now I’m launching this campaign to get closer to fulfilling that dream. If you can’t afford to donate, feel free to share this link widely on your social media to get the word out, any small help is deeply appreciated!

WHO WE ARE:

Kahumbi is an independent brand that works primarily with other queer POC artists and solely dependant on the profit of tailor-made orders, growing at a slow but steady pace, although not fast enough to allow Kahumbi to grow enough as to expand and become a queer POC business of its own.

Kahumbi is the name of a baby bird in Angolan mythology and it is said that its wings are large and they fly as the sun rises, inviting other birds to fly with them.

 WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE:

Kahumbi’s ambitions and goals are to build a working team and provide for black and colored queer artists living in Lisbon, as well as to create a space of growth and teaching & learning experiences to be shared and passed along.

Kahumbi's ambitions and goals rely on your kind support. A collective effort, as tiny as it could be, could really get Kahumbi to the next level making the best quality afro wear possible!

 BACKGROUND:

My name is Naára, the creator of Kahumbi.

I started dreaming about being a fashion designer before I even knew how it was called. I remember being an infant drawing clothing and making dolls wear with my mom when I realized that was exactly what I wanted to do for a living.

It did not come easy: I always had to work regular jobs to support myself and my son in the meantime, since I’ve graduated and enrolled in fashion design back in 2006.

I briefly attended Universidade da Beira Interior until realizing I wouldn't learn what I needed to be able to run my own clothing line there as it was more of a theoretical course. I'm not the kind of person who would have the capital to start off a company from scratch, hire a team for the brand I wanted to create. So I started a personal journey of learning how to make garments and that’s how I came back to Lisbon and enrolled at MODATEX - an institute that provides the essential technical and practical skills taught by textile and fashion professionals.

Finally - I was getting closer to what I needed!

After that I interned at a high-quality Portuguese streetwear brand, learning more about how building a successful brand. I finally bought my first domestic sewing machine and started to produce for friends and family, slowly developing my abilities and finally creating Kahumbi, by starting Kahumbi's Facebook page  to showcase my products and start selling them.
Later I created Kahumbi's Instagram too.

In 2013, I made my first collection, ‘’Back to cool’’, with the help of my friends who supported me with a photoshoot.

In 2014, I had my first runway show in the first edition of Black Fashion Week Lisboa.

After that, Kahumbi has been producing at least two collections each year and had many collaborations with artists and runway shows made independently and in collaboration with other entities and events, such as Brazilian lyricist and activist Bia Ferreira, Brazilian singer and activist Doralyce and Los Angeles based rapper Reverie. Runway shows included “Africa’s day” organized by Conexão Lusófona or Martim Moniz Fusion market, and the last runway show in November 2018, in collaboration with other independent brands like Royal Skuare, Mátria, and Bleeding Lx.

 FUNDS DESTINATION

Your donation will go directly to Kahumbi, to start building a team and setting up a new collection. The list below describes the main priorities at the moment and your donation would help the following elements to get off the ground:

NEW COLLECTION / RUNWAY SHOW - 800€
at a minimum, that would cover part of the costs, namely:
- Sewing materials and fabrics - 200€
- Location costs/ logistics / working team for the event - 301€
- 12 Models / 1 MUA / 1 Stylist /Assistant - 400€

Overlock Sewing Machine - 399€
This is the value of a semi-professional sewing machine, necessary for finishing details and deliver better quality sewing, such as this one

New Team Member hire - 900€
This would be the amount necessary to help with the first three months of payment of a new team hire on a part-time basis.

This person will support the communication with the clients, handle orders, manage Kahumbi’s online presence, building the website and all-around assisting;

Branding/Website - 300€

This would help with the costs related to the official registration of the brand as well as creating a website to exhibit the products and facilitate the sales, getting the brand visible worldwide.

Each of these steps is a huge milestone for Kahumbi. Whenever a milestone is reached, Kahumbi will send you an update and keep you posted on social media, so you can track our progress and hopefully cheer for us and help us with sharing this campaign even more widely! To the people contributing to each 500 euros breakthrough, Kahumbi will offer them a symbolic handmade piece. Who knows if that will be you?

Kahumbi's ambitions and goals rely on your kind support. A collective effort, as tiny as it could be, could really get Kahumbi to the next level for making the best quality afro wear possible!
