My PhD Studies in Aberdeen

It is at the behest of some of my friends that I started this campaign. I’m hesitant to do so, but after some thought and prayer, I decided that allowing my friends to contribute to the furthering of my education was the right decision. I will be attending the University of Aberdeen, Scotland to pursue a DPhil in philosophy. First off, I’ve been learning that John Donne got it right when he said No man is an island entire of itself. I cannot do this by myself; I need the support of those in my life who share my vision.

Now, what exactly is my vision? I’ll start with my dissertation thesis: I will be studying philosophy of technology, art theory, and using the framework of virtue ethics to do so. What exactly does this mean? I think certain philosophers have deep insights into the “technological mindset.” I will be exploring their conception of how technology has affected our view of the world around us. Once I have a full understanding of the technological mindset, I will turn to look at a powerful medium that makes one's mindset visible: art. I believe this art reveals the effects of this mindset; once it has, the question becomes: does this mindset enhance human flourishing, hinder it, or have both positive and negative implications?

Upon completion of my PhD, I hope to do further research in the areas of philosophy of technology, and more specifically bioethics. I believe that the speed of the availability of new technologies outpaces our ability to collectively consider the ethical implications of such technologies. This can be dangerous if the negative consequences are not seen until long after their affects are felt. I also hope to do research in the area of the philosophy of beauty. To truly behold the beautiful as beautiful is a gift that I hope to help others understand. This beholding is something modern man has lost.

How did I come up with the amount I’m attempting to raise? This is the amount I need for my first year of study. It breaks down as follows: tuition, $18,700; cost of living, $11,950; and visa fee, $1,500. These are rounded numbers. I didn’t think being exact was necessary. As you can see, this will be a costly endeavor. Please prayerfully consider supporting me. I need prayer as well as finances. If you decide to be a prayer partner, please let me know.
