My name is Cree Montague and I am about to begin my second year in adult nursing at the university of Nottingham. One of my main reasons for joining this course was the opportunity to travel to and help with healthcare in a developing country. This is why I want to raise £2000 so that this opportunity of a 4 week placement in the hospitals of Ghana can become a reality.
Healthcare is a basic human right, and I totally believe everybody should have access to a safe and effective healthcare system. In Ghana, though there have been welcomed improvements to their public healthcare system, there are still vital developments to be made. As of 2015, the infant mortality rate in Ghana was 43.0 compared to 4.0 in the UK. This is ten times higher than our own, which drastically shows the urgent call for improvements to the medical system in this beautiful West African nation.
In April of 2018 I'll be leaving the UK for a month-long placement in Ghana as part of my university course. I believe that it is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in helping bring a new life to this earth, whilst giving it the best starting chance, this is why during this time I'll be learning about maternal health whilst being involved in deliveries and postnatal care of the mothers and babies. I'll be learning about the difficulties faced by the healthcare professionals and how as a nursing student I can help to improve them, aiding in paving a way for a better healthcare system for the children of Ghana.
This wonderful opportunity does come with a cost, which includes flights and the price of the company I will be working with which is called Work The World. The money from this company goes towards funding the local hospitals and communities they are in. I will be raising some of the money on my own but would be extremely grateful for any help towards this opportunity.
