My Mom's medical fees

Donation protected
Hello everybody,

My name is Nadine. I was born and raised in Togo, in West Africa and I made the journey to the U.S. on my own after being awarded the diversity visa in 2011. Since then, I have done anything in my ability to help my family back home and take care of financial responsibilities.

I am currently a student at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and I aspire to one day become a public health professional.

Even though I consider the fact that I’m here as a huge blessing, it has been really hard to be away from my family. In fact, since my first trip back in 2014, I have not been able to visit my family in Togo.

My parents mean the world to me. They have always been there for me through highs and lows, despite everything we’ve struggled with.  My family has faced very difficult times dating back to 2010 when my dad lost his job, yet they’ve always managed to find ways to provide for my brother and I. The fact that I am in the US today is because of the financial sacrifices that they had made to pay for my plane ticket to Washington D.C. in 2011.

The constant support I have received, especially from my mom, all these years has motivated me to be the very best person I can be, and I owe everything to them.

For the past 6 months, my mother has been suffering from a severe condition which doctors recently diagnosed to be dermatitis herpetiformis. This is a condition related to the consumption of gluten.

The changes that can take place at an advanced level may include damage to the skin and the dilatation of the vessels. Dermatitis herpetiformis is often misdiagnosed and unfortunately, she was not able to get the help and treatment she needed soon enough.

She is currently hospitalized at the CHU Hospital located in Lomé, and been there since January 7, 2018. Her condition has now reached advanced levels, which is causing health complications. Her immune system has been compromised which exposed her skin to infections.

Because of this urgency, I am hoping to raise $2250 so that I can take care of my mom's hospital bills and take care of her papers so she can hopefully receive additional care here in the U.S.

My plan now is to get my mom the help she needs in Togo. Once she is stable, I will assist her in acquiring a visa to come to the US for additional care as soon as possible. I will also help her get started on a gluten-free diet and monitor her health. It is difficult to estimate the amount of time she would need to recover, but a visitor’s visa will allow her to stay up to six months in the U.S.

Our Expenses Include:

1.     Current hospital bills in addition to medications so far: $700

2.     Visa fees: $190

3.     Flights (Lomé-Minneapolis & Minneapolis- Lomé): $1810.00
(This is an estimation. Prices vary between $1350-3000, depending on how soon the flight is booked)

4.     I have already arranged for a place to stay free of charge.

5.     Anticipated future medications cost in Lomé : $350

Total Expense: $3050 - Personal Savings $800 = $2250

A mother is the most important gift that one can have. My mom has always been my first role model while growing up in Togo. She is one of those people who, no matter what life puts in front of her, always find a reason to smile.

When I left Togo, I promised to do everything that I can to give her the life she deserves one day because she has always believed in me and done so much for me.

Since I arrived in the U.S., I made sure to financially provide for my family as much as I can. Unfortunately, being enrolled as a full-time student has greatly reduced my ability to work as much as I did previously, and at the same time take care of school expenses as well as the general welfare of my family.

For this reason, I will deeply appreciate any amount you can contribute to helping my mother and I am very thankful for your time and generosity.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please feel free to share the link with your family and friends. On a final note, I want to thank everyone who has helped me through these difficult times. I would not have been here without you.
