MY INDIGENOUS ROOTS (Le Mie Radici Indigene - Mis raíces Indígenas) is a project born about ten years ago on my coming back from a visit to Jergul Astu, a little Sami hamlet in Northern Norway. At that time I got to know Berit Alette Mienna, a very kind and professional singer with a charming voice. We filmed some joiks 'traditional Sami songs' in the moonlight and the following day she told about their old traditions and childhood times. Two Years Ago, I had the chance to go back in Peru and while visiting The Central Forest I met some people of native community of Ashaninka-Yanesha ethnicity. During my first visit I got across with an odd red inflorescence which attracted me and resulted to be a flower of Bombonaje or Carludovica palmata. Hence, in the beginning, I supposed to create a booklet about native plants but the community's chiefs asked me to compile their history in a multimedia book.
So we devoted about 9 months to film in 4K the different experiences of the several member cooperating with.
By the end we made two multimedia books MAPINIKI and INTERACTIVE STORIES as well as the movie NA'PA CHOMOCH PALLERR YANESHA about a sage of the Yanesha ethnicity. Please, scroll this page to learn more and visit the related pages to watch a preview. Products are also available in English.
The main benefit of this ambitious project is not to lose these valuable traditions and above all the knowledge of natural medicine.
Nowadays, very a few people know how to use and recognize the plants that their ancestors were using in the various treatments including plague, measles and the flu brought by the Spanish invasion.
Plants that still exist today. I tried some remedies of them directly. Next book I would like to dedicate to this very important topic, especially today with the spreading pandemic virus COVID-19. They have a possible remedy for it too.
It took me 9 months to create the MAPINIKI multimedia book which you can browse through the preview giving all my resources.
The book is available in Spanish, Italian and soon in English and consists of 296 pages with 350 color photos, 70 videos and 10 audio clips based on the history of this community formed by two ethnic groups: Ashaninka and Yanesha. The about seventy topics covered range from Cosmovision to pregnancy, marriage and so on.
The importance of the project is also to create multilingual teaching materials.
One of the most serious problems faced by natives in Peru was forced monolingual literacy in Spanish. For some time a bilingual school project has started, but obviously it is in an embryonic state due to the lack of teachers who dominate the two languages and the recognized indigenous dialects are about fifty.
Benefit of Multimedia Material - Indigenous young people for the most part disregard their traditions, often use modern clothes and understand little of their language. With the excuse of shooting, during the realization of MAPINIKI, I instilled the desire to create lessons, even if occasional, of music and language, the photo below is one of these moments
THE FUNDS THAT WILL BE COLLECTED serve me to buy the new air ticket and support me for at least six months in Peru, to create several other multimedia books with the cooperation of other communities of different ethnic groups.
I would have already left at the end of March if it hadn't been for the infectious problem that is blocking us all.
