My daughter Debbie Case who is 48 years old mother of 4 with a career as an AutoCAD drafter went for her yearly wellness check
on June 26th and had routine bloodwork done.
Her numbers came back very low and her doctor thought she had anemia so they check her iron levels which came back normal. Bloodwork was repeated and showed the same results. This led her to seeing an oncologist at Florida Cancer Specialist.
After several more blood tests, an ultrasound of her liver and spleen and a bone marrow biopsy she was diagnosed with Acute
Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and referred to Moffitt Cancer Care
in Tampa.
AML is a rare blood cancer with less than 20,000 cases a year. This type of cancer can last several years or be lifelong.
It usually occurs in those 65 and older and the average treatment costs over $540,000 needing lengthy hospital stays.
At Moffitt Debbie had several more blood tests, a muga scan and a second bone marrow biopsy. Her new oncologist admitted her to the hospital where she'll stay for 30-40 days and then go home with trips back to Moffitt 2 to 3 times a week for another month. Followed with another 30 to 40 day admission with more chemotherapy and if a candidate for a bone marrow stem cell transplant she will need numerous blood transfusions and a 3 month stay away from home.
Debbie will use any donations to offset medical expenses since she will not be able to work for at least 6 month to a year or longer.
This cause is so important to me because as a mother no one wants their child to worry about finances when their trying to fight cancer and as a healthcare worker I know the importance of having medical care.
Debbie and her family would certainly appreciate any support emotionally, spiritually, and or financially she can receive.
