My Dad's Alzheimer's Care

On June  11th, 2017 my dad, James Nelson, suddenly forgot who my mom and I are. They were supposed to attend my Master's graduation on the 16th but but all of a sudden plans were cancelled since he couldn't recognize our faces. Although he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's in January of 2015, his memory of who we are to him had never wavered, he mostly had trouble with short-term memory, some words, and conversing with others. As of now, he can remember my sister, her family, and his siblings, but not my mom or me.

When this incident happened we had hoped he would would remember us again since it was a dramatic drop in his cognitive abilities, but he has still not fully recovered. Even his neurologist said this was extremely abnormal and he would have expected this type of deterioration to happen in 2 years, not now.

At the moment, he floats in and out of lucidity but cannot be left alone during the day. My mom works full time and cannot afford to take time off, while I live about 7 hours away for school and will not be able to move back to help for a while. We have found a program that will watch him during the day, however, this costs $2,000/month- an extraordinary expense for my mom, on top of rent, utilities, and other general expenses. $5,000 would cover 2.5 months of his care while I am able to prepare to move back home and help take care of him.

This has broken my heart in so many ways, he is a husband, father, and grandfather, but cannot remember us those who love him the most. Any contribution would be helpful- I am so grateful to all of those who are willing to help my family.
