My Family’s Home Bulldozed in Somalia

My name is Maryan Ali. I have been living in the North Glenora community of Edmonton for the past three years now and I am very glad to be a part of a community that is so welcoming and caring. I came to Canada when I was 10 years old with my two sisters following the war in Somalia in 1993. I tragically lost my father in the war and we were sadly separated from my mother as well. I was thankfully able to find my Auntie, Farhiya, years later and have maintained a close connection with her, sending her money whenever I can to help raise her children and grandchildren who live with her.
This has been a difficult month in Somalia as the political climate is very unstable and the government is currently changing hands. Five years ago, my Auntie unwittingly bought a house that was on government land. Now, with the country undergoing elections, the new government is forcing people off this land, bulldozing their houses with very little time for residents to gather belongings. This was her home. As a single mother with no job, she has been raising her 10 children there as well as 2 grandchildren between the ages of 2 and 20. With so little income, it is impossible for her to even send her children to school. They are now living in a temporary structure on land she rents for $50 per month (see below).
I humbly ask for any donation, big or small, to help me reach my goal of $10,000.00. I am able to safely transfer money to my Aunt via the Somali Money Union Transfer that is located here in Edmonton. This amount will cover the expense for land and the construction of a modest, 3-bedroom home with a washroom. All of the beds and household items were lost, but my Auntie believes that once they have a safe place to live, everything else will follow. The $50 per month she uses for rent would then be available to use for food and possibly sending the children to school.
