 On August 20, 2026, my 21‑year‑old daughter attacked me repeatedly. I survived, but my hands did not.

 I am a licensed manicurist. My hands were my career, my independence, and the way I cared for my children. In minutes, all of that was taken.

 I need help cleaning myself after using the bathroom.

 I need help washing under my arms and breasts.
</div>

 I need help preparing food.

 I need help caring for my three‑year‑old son.

 These are not things I “used to” need help with.
</div>

 These are things I actively need help with every single day.

 And while I fight to regain function in my hands, I also keep thinking about the signs I didn’t understand… signs I wish someone had told me to pay attention to.

 My mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and she stabbed her mother when I was 6yrs old… when I was growing up, violence touched our family too. I never imagined I would live through something similar with my own daughter. My daughter has not been diagnosed with any condition, and I am not claiming she has one. But she and my mother shared behaviors that, in hindsight, were warnings I didn’t know how to interpret.

 Before the stabbing, my daughter’s changes were small… almost too small to mention:

 • A sink repeatedly clogged

 • Personal items hidden or misplaced
</div>

 • Cleaning that created new messes
</div>

 • Needing step‑by‑step instructions for basic tasks
</div>

 • Hostility over tiny corrections
</div>

 • Difficulty caring for her own child’s hygiene and routine
</div>

 None of these things seemed “big enough” to call a doctor about. They felt embarrassing, confusing, or too insignificant to explain. But they were changes… changes from the daughter I knew.

 I am sharing this because I want other parents to trust their instincts.

 Not to panic.

 Not to diagnose.
</div>

 But to notice.

 Notice when the person you love is suddenly struggling with things they used to do easily.

 Notice when small behaviors start stacking up.

 Notice when you feel like you’re managing an adult through tasks they once handled on their own.

 If I had understood those pieces differently, I don’t know if it would have prevented what happened to me, and I will never pretend to know that. But I do know that parents deserve to hear that the “little things” matter.

 And now, I am trying to rebuild my life.

 I cannot return to my profession.
</div>

 I cannot support my household the way I used to.
</div>

 I have medical appointments, transportation needs, and daily responsibilities my hands cannot yet handle.
