My Dads (Eric Owen) Fight with ALS
Donation protected
In September my Dad, Eric Owen, was diagnosed with ALS. The doctors told him to stop working and enjoy his life before ALS takes it away from him. My Dad is a proud and stubborn man. He lives by the philosophy, if you can't earn it yourself you don't deserve it. For him to ask for help, is very hard when he thinks others deserve it more. My Dad is in denial, he doesn't deserve to work till you drop (literally).
Since September he has declined to the point of needing a wheelchair 100% of the time yet he is still working. He tells us he doesn't want to sit at home and stare out the window but we know that he's going to work to pay bills so my mom won't be left with debt when he dies. I just wish my Dad was afforded the opportunity to worry about himself and not the bills.
My parents live in a split level home and my Dad can't use the stairs. He is a veteran and the VA is assisting in getting a wheelchair accessible bathroom/bedroom. That assistance will only cover a portion of the cost and that's another worry my Dad doesn't need.
If you are reading this and know about ALS or know someone with ALS you know my father is going to die well before his time. It could be months or years we just don't know. What I do know is my Dad doesn't deserve to die on a makeshift bed going to the bathroom on a porta-potty in the living room. He deserves more than to worry about leaving my mother with debt. He deserves to enjoy is remaining time on earth and maybe make a bucket list. He deserves to die in peace. That's what I feel my dad deserves.
If my father's pride won't allow him to ask for help, I will ask for him. Please help my dad.
