My Canine Companion is a charity which provide dogs to assist children and young adults living with Autism. Allowing people to gain independence, companionship and safety. These service dogs are trained to standards set by Assistance Dogs Europe, (ADEu) and costs the charity just over €10,000 to train. Training is provided from birth, to graduation, a duration of approximately two years.
These Service Dogs can make a dramatic difference in the quality of life for children with Autism and their families. Not only do the dogs assist them physically, but these special dogs also become the child’s best, and in some cases, only friend.
From personal experience of having a son on the spectrum, life can be very hard to manage, without one of these dogs. The normal everyday tasks, of going to the shop or supermarket, can be a very stressful process for all involved. As my son Charlie, who is almost three year old, has autism, sensory processing disorder and is also currently non-verbal . Charlie wont interact with any kids, even his younger sister, so having a dog for him, will also be his friend.
We are a typical family, two adult and three kids. When one adult is working, the other becomes house-bound, as its simply impossible to go out and manage it all by yourself. Charlie is what is often referred to as "a runner", when overloaded with sensory issues, he will take off running, and fast... No traffic or other dangers will be considered and can be very frightening and dangerous.
The money raised on this page, will go directly to My Canine Companion. Allowing, the provision of training, for service dogs, to care for kids just like Charlie.
