Julie Reid, at just 40 years old, had a heart attack and surgery to add stents. She is a my daughter, she is a wife, she is a mother, a friend and a Girl Scout leader.
Julie was experiencing pain in her chest and her jaw for 2 days on and off. At first, she thought it could be indigestion or heartburn. Best case, her medication possibly needed to be changed. Luckily, she knew her body was just not right and decided the ER was a safe decision and went.
Julie was quickly transferred by ambulance to CMC Pineville to the cardiac department. Once at the cardiac department she was informed her enzymes were low, had blockages and worst of all, had a heart attack. Reminding you, she ONLY 40 years old.
Two months prior, Julie had successful Carpel Tunnel surgery and was looking forward to returning to work as her disability time was completely exhausted. Then her world fell apart.

She was as Admitted to the hospital on Tuesday 11/28/2017. Thankfully, she had her husband Nick, her 9 year old daughter, parents, in laws and a great friend, Kristine who came to her rescue. This tragedy struck just days before her only child's tenth birthday!!!!
On Wednesday 11/29/2017 she went into surgery which at that point it was discovered that 2 of her arteries were 99% blocked, and 3 were 75% blocked. The surgeon placed five stents inside her young 40 year old heart. In addition to those 5 blocked arteries. One is still at 100% blockage, which at this time, will remain that way. However, it may be determined in the near future that an additional stent is needed, when she is stronger and has time to recover physically and emotionally from this shock.
In viewing pictures of what her heart look liked prior to surgery, it was indicated that in less than two months without the help from the wonderful doctors in the cardiac department, We would have lost her. She would have died.

Apparently her heart has been like this for a while and some damage has been done. She will remain at high risk while this is all being sorted through. Medications will be have to be tweaked a long the way and furture testing as well. Some of this is definitely genetics as well. Taking 10 new medications a day and if she misses one it could be a disaster. The whole family is going to start eating better and will also help with Julie’s therapy.
There will be 3 or more months of cardia rehab, dietary counseling and life style changes in many ways.
With previously being on disability for the last two months, Julie was at 66% of pay, there is no long-term disability, and it is a long road which she will have to endure. Not having to stress over medical bills, as well as just the usual, everyday bills would go a long way to aid her recovery. Savings has been depleted. Funds are getting urgent at this time since Nick was injured at work and is currently unable to work and is limited as to what he can do around the house. He is waiting on approval to get surgery on the neck which is also extremely stressful.

More than anything, at this time we are extremely thankful she had the presence of mind to get to the hospital or we would be facing a loss we could not bear. As we enter the Christmas season we have more to be thankful for than we ever thought about before this. Life should never be taken for granted - but treasured like the gift it is.
