 My name is Adrienne Hurley. I’m launching this campaign for someone very dear to me who I respect very much and who prefers to remain anonymous. She has worked in crew (BTS) positions in the film industry in Canada for 40 years. In recent years she has had supervisory positions on different film and television projects. These jobs have always been a kind of gig work on a contract by contract basis. Nonetheless she always has been steadily employed until now. My friend, a single woman over the age of 65, has been without a job for eight months.

 As you may know, we are in the midst of a major employment crisis in the film industry. There has been a massive downturn in production at the same time that AI is increasingly being used to transform how films are made. Couple that with how older women all too often face barriers to career continuation due to employers’ biases and assumptions, and it’s turned into a really rough time for her career-wise.

 My friend’s situation is unique in that she owns a large home where she provides lodging for other older adults (seniors) of very modest means. It’s like an autonomous “old folks” home. It’s a beautiful project. She’s incredibly generous, and the people who live in her house love her very much. With the sudden drop in income, she is really worried she might have to sell the house, which would be absolutely devastating not just for her, but for those she houses.

 Of course, she is continuing to apply for work and thinking of ways to reorient her longterm plans. She is also applying for a reverse mortgage, but that process is taking longer than usual because of the unique configuration of her very special house.

 Knowing her, I am confident she will figure out how to make things work eventually, but right now she needs us. So I am asking for the support of her broader community — artists, older women, and everyone who loves them. Please donate whatever you can and share this with others. Let’s do what we can to show up for someone who shows up for so many! Let’s do our best to make up for income she’s lost and help her make it to the other side of this crisis.

 Je lance cette campagne pour une personne que je respecte énormément et qui préfère rester anonyme. Elle travaille depuis 40 ans dans les équipes techniques (BTS) de l’industrie cinématographique au Canada. Ces dernières années, elle a occupé des postes de supervision sur divers projets cinématographiques et télévisuels. Ces emplois ont toujours consisté en une sorte de travail à la tâche, contrat par contrat. Elle a néanmoins toujours eu un emploi stable jusqu’à présent. Mon amie, une femme seule âgée de plus de 65 ans, est sans emploi depuis huit mois.

 Comme vous le savez peut-être, nous traversons actuellement une grave crise de l’emploi dans l’industrie cinématographique. On observe un ralentissement massif de la production, alors même que l’IA est de plus en plus utilisée pour transformer la façon dont les films sont réalisés. Ajoutez à cela le fait que les femmes d’un certain âge se heurtent bien trop souvent à des obstacles pour poursuivre leur carrière en raison des préjugés et des a priori des employeurs, et cela s’est transformé en une période vraiment difficile pour elle sur le plan professionnel.

 La situation de mon amie est unique en ce sens qu’elle possède une grande maison où elle héberge d’autres personnes âgées aux moyens très modestes. C’est comme une maison des aînées autonome. C’est un magnifique projet. Elle est tellement généreuse, et les personnes qui vivent chez elle l’aiment beaucoup. Avec cette chute soudaine de ses revenus, elle craint vraiment de devoir vendre la maison, ce qui serait absolument dévastateur non seulement pour elle, mais aussi pour ceux qu’elle héberge.

 Bien sûr, elle continue de postuler à des emplois et de réfléchir à des moyens de réorienter ses projets à long terme. Elle fait également une demande d’hypothèque inversée, mais ce processus prend plus de temps que d’habitude en raison de la configuration particulière de sa maison très spéciale.
