I simply cannot let my friend watch her baby die just because he was born in a country with poor healthcare. I must help her to try and get her son to a country where he can have a liver transplant, which in the UK and the US has an 88% success rate. This means that he could not only live, but thrive, and lead a normal life.
My name is Nicole, and I work for an NGO in Sierra Leone. When I arrived, I met my colleague, Christphine, who had just given birth to a baby boy, Mustapha, a few months prior. She explained to me that soon after Mustapha was born she noticed that he still had strong jaundice and an extended abdomen so she took him to the doctor. After a number of tests and a surgery over the course of a month, he was finally diagnosed with Biliary Atresia with Liver Cirrhosis, which basically means his liver is not functioning correctly, and he needs a transplant. Without a liver transplant, Mustapha will die. Unfortunately, a liver transplant cannot be performed in Sierra Leone. Christphine's only option is to seek medical care outside of the country, which will cost her and her husband more money than they could save in a lifetime.
Christphine has shown an incredible amount of strength in all of this. She still manages to work, care for her two children and maintain a life, while researching, advocating and spreading awareness about Mustapha's condition and fundraising by whatever means possible. Where you are born is a lottery, but the strength of maternal love is the same the world over.
As Christphine's friend, colleague and a mother myself, I am determined to help raise the funds needed to pay for Mustapha's liver transplant in either Europe or India. Please help save Mustapha by donating anything you can!
