Muskwa, which means Bear in Cree, is a beautiful happy boy who's fluffiness would bring joy to anyone who sees him. He is an 8 month old puppy. He is a very gentle and playful guy with a ton of energy. He loves running around and wrestling with other dogs.
Muskwa was born in Fort MacPherson, NT where he was surrendered to the NWTSPCA and moved to Yellowknife. He was fostered by his perfect adventure partner, Rachel for a month before recently being adopted. Their mutual love for the outdoors made this a natural fit.
Only a week after his official adoption, on October 28th, he was the victim of a hit and run accident. Once taken to the Animal Hospital, we realized he couldn’t walk or move his back legs. It was clear that he had a spinal injury requiring surgery immediately which requires heading South to Edmonton.
With the help of Canadian North's manager, Pete Gillingham, and the NWTSPCA, Muskwa was flown to Guardian Veterinary Centre in Edmonton on November 1st.
While in Edmonton, Katie Brebner, a family friend and veterinarian technician, will be watching out for him and making sure he gets the best care post-surgery and throughout his recovery.
Since his accident, Muskwa has received an overwhelming amount of support from the Yellowknife community. Although, his journey is just beginning and he has a tough rehabilitation ahead of him before he can walk again.
The cost of surgery and the long road to recovery will cost an estimated $12,000-15,000, even with the generosity of the NWTSPCA and the Great Slave Animal Hospital in Yellowknife. These costs include surgery, medical stay at the vets, travelling to/from Edmonton, and rehabilitations costs.
Every dollar counts towards this beautiful puppy's recovery so he can once again walk and eventually run through the Northern terrain that he was born in. Any unused funds will be donated towards the NWTSPCA.
