Museum freelancers coronavirus fund

Donation protected
Freelancers in the museum and heritage sector have been hard hit by the situation caused by the Coronavirus, with the cancellation of contracts and organisations putting projects on indefinite hold, which has led to a drastic decrease in income and little hope of securing future work at the present time. Freelancers are integral to the sector, bringing ideas, support, new perspectives and creativity that hugely benefits organisations of all sizes. At this incredibly difficult time for freelancers, it's important we show them how much they mean to the sector and provide much needed support.

The government's support for freelancers goes nowhere near far enough to protect the self-employed and many people are facing a difficult and uncertain future. For more information, please see this excellent open letter from the Museum Freelance Network.

Inspired by the brilliant Middle Child fundraiser for Hull freelancers, we are aiming to provide a minimum of 10 x £200 hardship funds for museum freelancers who needs support at this time. The first 10 hardship funds will go to people who started freelancing in 2019/20 as they will get no financial support from the government. These will be distributed on a first come first served basis and there will be no questions asked. If we make more than our £2000 target, the extra money will also be made available to people who started freelancing prior to 2019 - if this happens, we will provide an update on this page. The first fund will be available at the start of May when we have a better idea how much money will be available.

This fundraiser has been set up by Laura Crossley, a museum sector worker. I am acting as the host of this GoFundMe page and will not profit from it in any way. Prior to taking up an in-house job at the National Football Museum, I freelanced for 8 years and was a co-founder of the Museum Freelance Network. Having been a freelancer, I know the difficulties of freelancing even during more normal times and I can't imagine how hard this period must be for people who are self-employed. I hope this crowdfunder will do a little to help people who need it.
