Multi-Lingual Elementary Book Club

Donation protected
Is this a book club with students who look like me? With students who speak the same languages as me? I am hopeful my students can answer "yes" to these questions on the first day of our multi-lingual morning book club. Please consider donating to fund a multi-lingual book club for Spanish-speaking students in an elementary school.

I have the greatest job in the world! I work with English language learners between ages 6 and 13, many of them native Spanish speakers. These students can read, speak, and understand Spanish, but have never had the opportunity to enjoy children's literature in their native language. They can help Mom send a text message, decode a tweet, or read posts on social media, but have not interacted with a full story in their first language.

To build pride in cultural heritage, self esteem, and create a rich learning environment, it is my goal to host a Spanish language book club this  semester. Often times, my students are the only minority members of a classroom, and view their heritage as a deficit, rather than an asset. By providing an environment where students can feel safe sharing their language and unique experiences with their peers, I am hopeful to build self-esteem and ameliorate their perception of being Spanish-speaking English language learners in America. In addition, studies have shown that students with higher written and verbal proficiency in their first language have higher success rates acquiring a second language- in some cases academically outperforming their monolingual peers. The Spanish novels you are helping to provide will contribute to students' social-emotional and academic proficiency.

With these materials, our students will have the opportunity to meet every morning for 20 minutes to read a short novel in Spanish, deepening their understanding of their first language and building relationships with peers. This project will purchase five copies of the popular children's chapter book "Perro Apestoso" written by Colas Gutman and illustrated by Marc Boutavant. Each copy on Amazon is priced at $22.99. By having a set of 5, each student will be able to have their own copy and follow along with the book. "Perro Apestoso" tells the tale of a very, very, smelly dog, living in the trash with no friends, who decides to go on a quest to find an owner. On his journey, he encounters many obstacles- some big, some small, and some scary- along the way, he doubts he will ever find someone to love him, but in the end, he achieves his goal.

Thank you for helping to fund an multi-lingual book club for Spanish-speaking elementary students.
