The Multicultural Learning Center  (MLC) is a  501(c)(3) California public benefit, non-profit corporation operating a K-8 dual immersion (Spanish/English) public charter school in Canoga Park, California.

MLC was founded in 2001 by mother and daughter team Toby Bornstein and Gayle Nadler with the vision to “bring together a diverse community of learners where cultural and individual differences are the building blocks of academic, social, and intrapersonal success.” The founders were on the frontlines of LAUSD’s failed attempts to integrate schools in the 1970’s. They realized what was needed to successfully integrate, diversify, equalize, and bridge achievement gaps in Los Angeles schools was an appropriate curricula and instructional practice such as dual immersion and global education. MLC was created not only to reverse the trends that existed in segregated schools and neighborhoods and serve the needs of a diverse community, but to prove that a school has the potential to impact the community in which it resides, and the world beyond its borders.

Within an environment of social justice MLC students:

> Achieve biliteracy in English and Spanish

> Create meaning and come to know and respect each other through group processes, research and questioning, and use of the arts and technology to develop literacy and multicultural understanding.

> Self-reflect on their achievements and set new goals with a growth mindset.

> Communicate to solve personal and social challenges in ways that build resiliency, tolerance, and responsibility.

> Celebrate cultural and individual diversity as they develop skills and understanding necessary for global citizenry and community leadership.

Please support one of our Engagement Buckets:

Alan Bornstein College Scholarship Fund – Named in honor of the late husband and father of MLC Founders, the MLC Foundation awards $500 - $1,000 to MLC graduates each year.

Elementary Campus Field Renovation Project – After 16 years, MLC’s Elementary Campus field is in need of a facelift due to the drought. The once grassy field is now a dirt patch. MLC parents have identified a new play field as a number one fundraising priority.

Arts and Technology – Support MLC’s efforts to integrate visual, performing and media arts into the daily curriculum with artist residencies, supplies, equipment and professional development for teachers.

Field Trips – MLC believes students need to experience the world around them to better connect to their learning, particulary in the area of science. Support our Living Laboratory Project with day-trips in the Los Angeles area or overnight field trips such as the annual 8th grade 5-day trip to Catalina Island Marine Institute.

Bilingual Education – Support our bilingual students in need of resources in English and Spanish to reach their goal of biliteracy by the 8th grade! Books, learning materials, speakers, professional development are all needed to support this tremendous effort.

Social Justice – Support our teachers’ efforts to expand curriculum to include opportunities for our students to engage in social justice  projects centered around humanity, identity, environment, equality, and freedom.
