Mukesh’s Brain Cancer Treatment

This has been written by Mukesh’s son:

On the 29th May 2019, everything changed for our family and our lives were turned upside down. My dad had a pain in his head, something that he thought was a simple headache and no more. This was until my mum noticed difficulty/pauses in his speech as well in calculating. Worried by this, we decided to go to the doctor, only to receive the most shocking and worst news possible.

An MRI scan showed that he had a tumour on the left side of his brain, classified as a high grade glioma. This type of tumour affected the part of the brain controlling speech and other motor functions, meaning he was unable to listen and speak properly. We were told that without treatment he would have 3 to 6 weeks, and with the correct treatment, his life expectancy was predicted to be 12 to 18 months. From the biopsy, the haematologist gave us even more bad news - my dad had ITP (meaning his blood did not clot normally, leading to excessive bruising and bleeding) as well as a form of blood cancer - the tumour was spreading by the second. We got the first surgery done at a huge expense and it was successful, removing quite a bit of the tumour. After this came the difficulty of continued treatment. My dad was supposed to have 6 weeks of radiotherapy with a concurrent 10 weeks of chemotherapy, which occurred on and off unfortunately due to issues with his platelet count. He also had a platelet transfusion when his count dropped drastically.

As it stands, this tumour has been classified as Glioblastoma Multiform - a highly aggressive brain cancer with median survival of 12 to 14 months with the correct treatment. My dad’s form of brain cancer is very rare due to the other conditions he has also developed, meaning treatment and medication takes time to work for him as his body is fighting against it. There are many different treatments that we have researched and found out about, but all of it is very expensive. The current amount of money needed for treatment is around 3,000,000 rupees (this includes chemotherapy, medication, surgery, post-operative care and more).

We are a small family living in India, but my dad has worked extremely hard all of his life to sustain our family. He has always strived to do his best and provide for us, always ensuring we are happy and content with our lives. The life savings that he worked so hard for are now close to 0, as we have spent all of the money on treatment. This news has ripped our heart apart and I struggle everyday with the idea of what could happen next. As a son, I cannot begin to describe how crucial it is that I have as many months and years with him as I possibly can. Any amount you can donate would mean the world to us so that my dad can get the treatment he deserves.
