Muchila Access Project, MAP, is a US 501c3 corporation. It is named for the remote area of Southern Zambia, which is vast and inhabited by subsistence farmers who live without essential services such as electricity, public water, and sanitation.
MAP has worked to improve the Muchila Rural Health Clinic, which before our efforts, was a simple cinder block building with no electricity or running water. When traveling to provide oral health care, the team of volunteers has used this building as a base of operation. Over the years, thousands of patients have received dental treatment there ranging from fluoride treatment for children to complex extractions. With input from the Village, it was determined that the health of Muchila would be significantly enhanced if there could be clean water and an expanded building to help with maternal and child health needs as well as dentistry.
With support from our funders, MAP raised funds and the village now has a borehole and storage tank for clean water as well as ample space in a new building. We have also improved the building and provided interior plumbing, including water and sinks in each treatment room, showers and water closets for patients and staff, solar to power lights, locked storage for supplies and improved building infrastructure to support these improvements. The building improvements are designed to meet Ministry of Health standards so that the building can become the ongoing responsibility of the public health system.
